I've heard that you can crack the dropouts on magnesium lowers with a bolt-on axle. Is this true?

My hubs are quick release and I want to stiffen my fork up a bit... at least until I can afford a thru axle fork. How much would a bolt-on stiffen it?

The '04 BigHit Spec has the same fork as I do (EXR pro) and has a bolt-on axle. I don't think Specialized would jeopardize customers with a cracked lower, would they?

Is there a specific torque that keeps it safe?
