Part of me feels bad about this... but mostly I'm just laughing my a$$ off. George, Dave (DFMT?), Fred and I were doing some exploring at Lyon's Lake and the Deer creek area just outside of Twain Harte. George ran out of water and was feeling the heat so took a bailout and Dave went with him. While Fred and I went on a qwest for the illusive trail 33....

While looking for Trail 33 Fred and I run into three cows on a RR grade, being cows and way too stupid to step off the side of the trail and let us pass they started running away from us along the trail. After a minute one peeled off into the brush but the other two kept running. They kept a good pace for about a half mile or so then Fred says "Lets pick up the pace and they'll move to the side". So we start rolling faster and faster trying to get around them. We were cruising (uphill I think) around 15MPH and they still kept running. I had no idea they could move that fast. Finally one peels off but the other keeps going. We slow down a bit and the one in front of us decides to drop a load so she can make better speed. We follow this one for another 4-5 minutes dodging an apparantly endless train of cow crap. Eventually, I get impatient and sprint to make a pass. As I'm passing out of the corner of my eye I see the cow duck her head and lunge towards me like she's trying to head butt my bike. I put on a little more speed to avoid her and take off. A couple minutes later Fred catches my and he's laughing "Should have caught that on camera, I've never see anyone tip a cow on a mountain bike before". What? I missed that part. Apparently the cow wasn't trying to butt me she was trying to do a quick 180 and lost her footing in the process. Slipped and fell on the ground, Fred quietly slipped around her because she was too pooped to get up...

So I feel a little bad and hope I didn't hurt her but on the other hand... Who's ever tipped a cow on their bike before?

Man, that heat got to me. Got one of those 'hot ride' headaches working on me and my arms are sunburned.

Trail 7 was a blast and the climb out wasn't THAT bad..... just fricken hot.

I figured out where you guys messed up and how you missed trail 33.

... We saw the turn off, we just didn't want to do the extra climb and wind up on the backside of Crandall Peak when we had no water.

The heat got to all of us. I ran out of water and had to get some from Fred also. Then when he was giving it to me he found out he was almost empty also and was down to just the Cytomax in his water bottle. By the time I got to the saddle where Pinball takes off I was empty again. I think Fred ran out somewhere around the river crossing. I wound up drinking some water from the river... good stuff when I hadn't had anything in 3-4 miles. Hopefully I won't have the squirts tomorrow.

More Pics:
#1 and #2 - Proof that yes indeed George does know where his Mountain Bike is parked and occasionally rides it.
#2 - George again on the very steep and dusty trail 16
#3 - Fred at the start of Fun/ fast/ Airborn trail 7
#4 - Dave on trail #7.
#5 - A welcome dip in the river at the end of the ride.

That was [email protected] hot! Fun, but HOT.

Thanks again guy's for the Tour of 108, I'll gladly return the guide-service duty anytime on the coast!
Tour? That was just the preview. Not even the best there is to offer. I'm going to take you up on your offer to show me around your stomping grounds in a couple weeks.

I've been going over maps today and I THINK... I THINK, it would have been easier, and cooler to just cross the creek at Itallian Bar and take the fire road that parallels the creek on the other side of 7.

But that would require a tough hike-a-bike up to the railroad grade.

I really liked trail 7 though.
