Counterfeit Shinano Cleats

Got some cleats off eBay. Looked legit. Shipped fast and good price at $13/set. Seller is wshhothot. I am asking for a refund. No reply so far.

I recently installed them and right off the bat things did not seem right. Hard to engage, release, and they squeaked when quite a bit and then they rusted, which none of my other ones did.

I checked the sellers site and the only red flag, other than price and eBay and china, was the word "compatible" next to the dropdown for choosing sh-sm51 vs 56.

In any case, I thought I would share. The packaging of the counterfeits looked perfect. The cleats themselves really only show a difference in the stamping of the brand/model and in the finish. Fakes are pained rather then anodized, I think.

Interesting. Did they come in the typical plastic Shimano package with the blue top?

They did. The eBay page shows the full package. I did not save the tops but the plastic part looks the same.

The bevel angle on the sides of the rear tab looks completely different.

How is there money in fake cleats?
Especially when the other is so close anyway. I reckon one wasn't much more expensive to produce then the other?

I had same question. At the time, my usual haunts were out of stock, which is why I went to eBay in the first place.

Shimano makes money. It's just a chunk of metal and if this is inferior material/tolerances with cheaper labor, that'd mean they're making even more.

Jenson has 'em for less than $13. Pretty sure I ran across them at ~$10.50 the other day, but that could've been sh-56...anyway, given those are retail outlets it's not tough to see why they'd do it. Harbor Freight cleats. ;)

I just don’t trust eBay or Amazon at this point. If I can’t get it from my LBS or one of the big online stores like Jenson, I’ll start asking friends if they have anything laying around that I can use to get by for a while.

"Shinano" should have been your first tip-off.

PSA/hijack - there are a crapload of counterfeit HG901 chains out there on the interwebs right now.

Telltale sign... the pins are solid instead of hollow. Chainwear gauge to one out of the box is off the scale.

Also starting to think there are fake KMC chains out there now considering off channel price vs reputable retailer availability.

Buyer beware.

I got a fake KMC chain. It broke 4 different times.

So you thought the same seller who lists this item in their store was also a legit Shimano dealership?

Clearly that is Sram.

I have 51's I use with my XTR Trails. I dug up a pair of 90's Shimano 535 pedals and tossed them on a spare bike and was pretty much locked in and couldn't release. Even with the tension all the way out. That's all I got.

Well a quick search of Aliexpress shows x11.93 chains available and going for around $12... yet nearly all reputable retailers (~$30) are out of stock including KMC. That confirms it for me.

If it looks too good to be true...

I see nothing wrong here. I’ve ordered brake pads and a dildo from Competitive Cyclist before.

Can you return the latter if you find it defective?

Had a ... ahem ... hard time finding the dildo on CC's site.
Finally located it under "riser bars."
Looks like a good one. Did you post a review?

No idea, the one I ordered was the perfect length and girth so I didn’t consider a return.
