I converse with other riders about bikes and related stuff. Mission accomplished.

What the "official" mission statement and core values are, if they even exist, are really not a big concern to me. However, those items do seem to be a huge concern to others who have basically written off this site already and carry on most of their communications on other forums, other than some compulsive need to come back and try to prove to everyone else who is still here that we should do some kind of soul searching about e-values. Weird.

I've been told that MTBR has a clear mission and core values.

What are they?
They are run by the Freemasons, so who knows what the real mission is?

It may be to destabilize the Middle East.

Mission...

every Sunday I ride my bike on down to the Mission, which I believe was built with donations and help from the executives at MTBR. If it wasn't for that mission, I don't know where I'd be today. Rotten to the core, I suppose.

So there you have it: Mission & core.

Pretty much stated in the guidelines
MTBR.com Message Board Posting Guidelines
(applies to all forums, classifieds, gallery posts, avatars, signatures, profile information, and anything posted on our website)

Our mission is to help mtn. bike enthusiasts and foster a healthy community. The message boards are the core of our community. As a result, we would appreciate it if people read and abide by these guidelines.

The Mtbr staff and volunteer moderators monitor the message boards, removing inappropriate content. The purpose of these guidelines is to explain what kind of messages are "inappropriate," and therefore will be deleted. We are explaining these guidelines beforehand, so if a message is removed everyone will understand why it was removed. In general, we err on the side of leaving messages up. The entire site is premised on sharing product information, so as one might imagine we are strong proponents of free speech. That being said, here are some specific reasons why we remove certain messages:

1. The message insults or degrades another member of the community.
2. The message contains profanity, offensive language, or racial epithets.
3. The message is an advertisement or spam.
(NOTE: It has been an "unwritten" rule for us to let it slide, when people who buy an Mtbr Classified ad, post in the forums. However, due to the recent increase in these ads, we will now be locking these types of posts. And you may NOT post an ad in more than 1 forum. ADDENDUM: Posting "What's It Worth" type threads may be considered spam and may be deleted at the moderator's discretion. Check our Classifieds section for similar bikes/parts for value.)
4. The message contains obscene or pornographic images/photos/text/videos.
5. The message promotes illegal activity (at our discretion).
6. The message has been posted to more than 2 boards. Posting the same message to multiple boards is spam, and all posts may be removed and the user may be banned. Please post to the most relevant board only, no more than 2.
7. The message is posted as "flame-bait" and is posted to incite flames and insults.

***Mtbr.com is an online resource for mountain bikers. We have a responsibility to the mountain biking community, to manufacturers, and to retailers. In the sharing of ideas, opinions, and experiences we hope to provide an open atmosphere where all parties can feel free to share their stories. While debates and differing opinions are all part of interfacing with many others, constant and continous badgering and flaming of others will not be tolerated, and will be dealt with at the management's discretion. Users are free to share experiences, whether good or bad, positive or negative. You have your chance to speak your peace. However, do not attempt to abuse our site by making this a place for your own personal campaign against other forum members, manufacturers, or retailers nor as your own personal soapbox.***

In addition to #3 above, please do not post Classified Ads/Want Ads/Trade Ads in the message board forum. Please post these in our Classifieds Section.

Threads that keep getting "bumped" back to the top with "hey, bumping this post back up" type posts will be locked. If you do not have anything new/informative to add to the post, please do not attempt to "bump" a thread just to keep it at the top.

A note about avatars and signature files: Inappropriate/obscene or distasteful avatars may be removed by us at any time. You may also be asked to change your avatar, should we deem the avatar to be inappropriate. Please do not post ads for bikes or parts in your forum signature, they are NOT allowed.

Also, users registering multiple accounts and posing as different people is NOT allowed and one or all of your accounts may be banned without warning.

Unfortunately we must reserve the right to remove messages. However, we truly love this community, so we will only remove any given message if we judge that it's in the best interest of the community. Please feel free to ask questions or direct comments to us.

Manufacturer/Retailer Posting Guidelines:

* All Manufacturers / Vendors / Shop Owners / Sponsored Riders should declare their status as a Retailer / Manufacturer in their signature
* Online selling of parts, components or bikes will be accompanied by a paid ad and properly labeled as "Ad" with a link to the paid classified ad or mtbr sponsorship.
* Any one reviewing or testing products and / or components online must state whether they have a vested interest in the product up front. They should state whether they bought the product or they got the product free or with an industry deal or are prohibited from saying negative things about a product.
* All links in a signature for articles for sale should be removed before posting. No "under the signature" shilling or free advertising allowed.
However, if you own or work for a bike shop, you MAY put a link to your shops website main page to show your affiliation.
* Manufacturers and Industry folks are encouraged to respond to any questions directed about their product. This is the perfect opportunity to inform and 'set the record straight.'
* Bottom line: Participate and post content in mtbr. Don't use mtbr to get free money for your business. Sponsoring mtbr assures our survival and is very affordable. Contact [email protected] and [email protected] for more info.

Sincerely,

Francis Cebedo, Founder
Gregg Kato, Site Manager
That is interesting. This is a commercial enterprise if I am not mistaken, and that is only partially eluded to - by an implication - right in that last bullet point about 'sponsoring'? That seems quite extraordinary - for a business to not acknowledge its commercial objectives?

Sponsoring mtbr assures our survival and is very affordable.
So is this site here to primarily make cash or to "help mtn. bike enthusiasts and foster a healthy community"? I'm not saying they are mutually exclusive objectives but it should be laid out.

BTW what is a 'healthy community'?

7. The message is posted as "flame-bait" and is posted to incite flames and insults.
Ok how do you know the posters motivation for posting a post? This guideline #7 would imply that the mods NEED to know motivation to enforce this guideline. Also if insults are not allowed under guideline #2 than should not the insulter be deal with rather than the OP?

While debates and differing opinions are all part of interfacing with many others, constant and continous badgering and flaming of others will not be tolerated, and will be dealt with at the management's discretion.
Ok how are we defining 'badgering' and 'flaming'? Aren't insults and 'libel' type issues already covered?

Which part of the guidelines allowed a moderator (downhillfaster) to harass Anthony S and Yeti for a couple of years and try to get him fired until he died?
True, that may not have been right, but it wasn't for so long (not years) and eventually DHF and AnthonyS made up.....DHF even demoed the Yeti 7 with Anthony when the demo Truck went to AZ....(and DHF decided to step down as mod after that)

Holy crap! You mean they escaped???? Well, partially at least... Hmmm. So it's needful for any particular business to disclose its commercial objectives? To whom? Why? It may be nice, but it's certainly not required.

Why do they have to lay it out? Are you being charged for posting/reading here? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Open to the readers' interpretation, as you well know. Don't play dumb.

Valid question, sure, but do you really think "the rules" need to be laid out to cover every possible contingency? Dude, it's a feakin' message board, not life. You could always start your own message board and run it however you choose, you know.

That seems to be up the the individual mods that notice something going on, or a particular user who complains to a mod about something. Lots of grey area and wiggle room here, depending on context. Does the "badgered or flamed" feel they've been treated so?
So, I guess I'm missing the back story, but the impression from this thread is you have some sort of axe to grind, eh?
