Insurance

On Jeffh's comments.........true that,

remember everyone....CalStar does offer insurance. It is $40 per year, or for an extra $5.00, you and family for $45.00 a year.

The reason? The $10,000 or so that many insurance companies pay out could still leave you with a $15,000 out of pocket expense to cover the flight.

The money goes directly to Calstar's organization.

Cheers

Glad there around, I just hope none of us need to go for a ride in it.
I want to throw up. These non-profit folks charge $25,000 per short flight. They have so much money they bought six of these $4 million helicopters and are growing like gangbusters.

What they are charging is insane. It is out of line with the rest of civilization. Most helicopter rescues charge about $5k.

francis they bought new ones, that can carry more load IE 2 people at a time, that can fly on IFR [instruments] old ones were vfr, have night vision capabilites. in other words it gives us a better shot in getting critical patients out of Santa Cruz County in bad weather

I spent the $45

I can't tell you how many times Calstar has come through at night and in bad conditions when Stanford and REACH have aborted due to weather or darkness

How do I sign up?

Anyone have a link to sign up for the services offered by the helicopter company? I think this is a great idea for all MTR's and their families.

I spent the $45 too. Now I have 6 different insurance policies.

Still, $25k per flight is air highway robbery. $45/year vs. $25k/flight is funny math in my book.

Having read the linked article in the Biz Journal, it sounds like these guys found and filled a niche. Traditional economics would suggest that if they are charging too much, they'll get comptetition soon.

I wonder who pays if they get called in and the patient doesn't have $25K?

it's an insurance pool with them betting that you never need them and you betting that you will. odds are in their favor, but if they fly a member out the insurance covers you and Calstar for the out of pocket cost.

as for cost. you are right each flight doesn't cost that much but from experience for every person we fly out, 8-10 flights get canceled with the helo circling overhead, on the ground at a remote LZ or turned back by weather. thats what costs the $$ to run the show
