Here is a cool Mod i did on my Manitou Minute 3:00 that i thought i would share, as it was not that difficult to do.
I like the Infinate travel adjustment feature that Manitou has been puting on some of thier high end forks, but after using it for a while, i noticed that the IT switch its self was sort of difficult to get to and opperate. So I thought of a way to hook the system up to a grip shifter.
The mod works great, and is a thousand times more effective than the stock thumb lever that comes with the forks.
To complete the mod, simply get any grip shiftef, left or right hand, whichever you like. I got this X.O off ebay for $25. In order to connect the grip shifter to the cable, you must pop the shifter apart and remove the metal spring that causes the shifter to click into diffreent gears, dont reasseble yet, but once reassembled, the shifter would move freely back and forth like a throttle with no rebound spring.
Now you must guide the cable from the fork through the shifter backwards while it is apart. This is not too difficult to figure out. If your cable is too short. Simply refer to the Maintou website for instructions how to replace the cable. Its a simple procedure and requires only a standard shifter cable. Once the cable is guided through the shifter you need to attach something to the end of the cable in order for the shifter to grab ahold of it and do anything with it.
Find a standard 14 guage spoke and nipple, cut the head of the nipple off with a pair of heavy duty wire cutters. Now carefully drill a small hole in the side of the nipple all the way through. Make the hole just big enough for the Cable to fit through. Now take the spoke and bend the threaded tip of it 90 degrees, and cut it. This will make an L shaped bolt that you will screw into the bottom of the nipple to clamp down the cable inside of it. Bending it 90 degrees before cutting it leave you with a small L shape that will allow for some leverage while tightening the new spoke bolt into the nipple. Now screw in the bolt you just made into the nipple and slide the cable through the hole that you drilled in the side of it. Clamp it down accordingly and reassemble the shifter! The last step of reassembling the shifter can be a little tricky and may take a few shots.
