I have the beginnings of a plan to build a new wheel for our TAB shifter and use a 9-speed hub/cassette. I didn't get a chance to look at it last night to see, but is there any issue with mounting a new rd?

Our kids don't shift because the grip shifter is so tight, even with new cable/housing and disassembling/lubing the shifter.

They're already on 'real bikes' as you put it, but our youngest is 4 and all 3 of them like to ride trails with me.

I figure it's standard 130mm spacing and a 9-speed hub is 135mm but since the frame is steel I can just bend it open and it will fit fine.

I'm also considering an internal gear hub but want to keep total cost down, so who knows.

Don't spend that kind of cash. I fixed my son's TAB for less than $5 by getting a cheap indexed thumb shifter.

My solution can be found in these threads.

Well, building up a special wheel will probably work, because you can certainly spread that frame a little, but I don't see how that keeps costs down. It sounds like you're into it, so do something up and show us all what you come out with.

A new igh would be a few hundred, I can put a new hub/cassette/spokes/rear der. in for probably $100 if I build the wheel myself.

I'm still just toying with the idea and will prob get a trigger shifter first to try as suggested above (and I've thought about, just never acted on).
