considering 575. some Q's

1463 Views 23 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  gunfodder
Hi all,

I'm considering joining the tribe on a 575.

I'm 6'2" X 200lbs. guess I need a L size (?). I ride all trails, not jumping more than 3' but flowing everything ...

I have some Q's that trouble me about the suspension design:

How stiff is the rear ? say compared with Heckler or BLT ?
While climbing, does the suspension stay active ? do you find it "harsh" when hitting sharp edges while pedaling ? I ride a FSR and I'm spoiled ...
Is brake-jack an issue with the 575 ?

Well, I'll answer your question about climbing. That is what has impressed me the most about this bike, and I've only had it for 4 days!. The suspension is entirely active when you are climbing, however pedal-bob is nearly non-existant. It *might* not be as plush going uphill as your FSR, however downhill it would easily tromp the FSR in a plushness comp IMO.

Brake Jack dosn't seem to be an issue at all. I came from a Stumpy hardtail, and I havn't noticed any braking difficulty at all.
Cheers

The 575 swallows up large obstacles when climbing. I've ridden a few FSR's and would never consider them to be plush. Also, brake-jack is not an issue. The rear seems stiff to me when I'm riding (what else matters?). I've never grabbed the rear and tried to flex it, though.

Buy the 575, you won't regret it.

I'm 6ft, 195bls and the large 575 with a 90mm stem is perfect for me.

Brake jack was something I was worried about as well, coming from a CDale Jekyll that was like riding a rigid when on the brakes. The 575 stays quite active during braking, and doesn't feel even remotely close to my old single-pivot bike at all.

The flex issue is overblown IMO. If you stand in the parking lot and really lay on it can you see the rear triangle flex a bit? Probably. Are you ever going to notice on a trail? I sure don't.

The 575 is a plush bike that climbs well and wants to be ridden all day long, up or down, it does equally well. A very versatile ride for sure.
I have been going through the same thing as you TM, have had the finger on the trigger and ready to pull it for weeks. The only problem is I'm 6,1 but i have a 36.5" inseam, so as far as i can tell I'm right in between a M and a L.

I too am comming off a Stumpy FSR and brake jack is my main concern about the 575.

Anyone else have anything positive or negative about the 575 supension design ???
I'm 6'2'', 200lbs, ride the Large. Get a Large, I know that much.

I love the bike. Technical climbs and trails are easier than on my old Bontrager Race hardtail.

My road loops are slower on my 575, but not by much. Example: I have a short road loop that I do once a week. On the Bontrager, my best time ever was around 54 minutes. On the Yeti, my best time is 58 minutes. Keep in mind, this is a 100% road loop which does not benefit the 575.
575

I'm 5'11" and ride a Med with 100mm stem. If I were much taller I would go with the Lg. It depends on what you like though I guess. Either way, once you decide on size you wont regret the ride.

Ive got an XL and I love it!!!!!!

No experience with an aluminum swingarm 575, recently got a medium carbon 575. I go 175 lbs geared up and I do notice some flex in the rear on off camber straightaways and through high speed corners. Everything except the fork was transferred from another bike so I know its not the wheels or tires. Again this is with a carbon swingarm. You will probably need to demo a bike to see if you if its a enough to bother you.

I find the rear suspension on the 575 to be quite similar to a modern FSR in terms of feel. The only difference i think is there is a bit (and i mean very slight) more bob in the 575 which is easily tuned out with the RP23 set to "1" (the lightest setting). Only been on my bike for less than 2 weeks and still tuning the fork and shock but haven't noticed any brake jack of any significance.

I have been on my 575 for over a year now.. I am 6'1" and 195 with a 34" inseam. I rode an '02 Spec Stumpjumper FSR Pro and the Yeti out does the Spec in every catagory. Even climbing and it weighs 6 lbs more. I have it set up with a 120mm stem and I am very comfortable. I am so glad that I didn't buy a medium... even though there was one available and I had to wait 6 weeks for my large to be delivered.

David
I've been on my 575 for about a month, and on tonight's ride I was thinking about how the bike just keeps getting better and better.

I'm 6'1", and I fit perfectly on the Large with a 110mm stem. I certainly wouldn't want it to be any smaller. My LBS (where i didn't buy) had both a medium and a large, and I didn't even test ride the medium around the lot, just sitting on it and it was obvious it was not long enough.

I'm tall, but also thin (165 geared up)..I ride pretty aggressive XC, and don't huck beyond what I find when riding southern rocky mountain singletrack. So, there are lots of drops, but I'm certainly not hucking on it. I don't notice ANY flex in the rear. I'm coming from a Fisher Cake (sucks) which was a pretty stiff bike, and it certainly doesn't feel soft to me.

I have noticed a tiny bit of brake jack, but only really randomly, and it usually isn't a big deal. Not like the GF Cake, which brake jack was obvious on every ride.

Know this: Even though the 575 has a whole buncha travel, it's not a 'freeride' bike...it's certainly an all-day XC machine...a backcountry tool. It doesn't feel like a huckster, although it flow's down singletrack like water. Mine is set up with a Fox Vanilla and RP3, and it completely swallows everything.

It rules. Can't go wrong. buy it.

I would guess a L is the right size for you. One of the main reasons I chose the 575 is because it fit me perfectly. Is there any way you can test ride one?

I have never felt any flex in my bike, but I only weigh 160. I have watched the swingarms of a couple of SuperLights flex several inches off line without any reaction from their owners. Some people notice flex, and some people don't.

I test rode a 6" Enduro fairly extensively. In my experience it was plusher uphill, which is what you'd expect from a heavier bike with a softer shock and more travel. The 575 is plush enough for me, although I do get some pedal feedback in the granny gear. I have no problem climbing behind my friend on his 6" Enduro, although usually he is following me uphill :)

I have never had any problems with brake jack. I might have felt it once or twice in almost two years of riding.

The 575 is designed to work best at speed. All of these potential problems disappear when you are bombing downhill or powering up climbs in the middle ring. If you like to go fast then the 575 is the bike for you.

THX for the info guys ...

I'm trying to get a large demo bike. only M are available so far.

The bike will get all the stuf from my current rig :

RS Revelation 426 U-turn up front - someone with experience with it on the 575 ?

rear shock - should I take the RP23 or go for DHX-air ?
anyone with experience on the RS pearl on the 575 ?
definitely felt brake jack coming down a steep descent while grabbing a handful of brake...you can minimize the brake jack somewhat with design, but with a single pivot, it wont be active as some other four bars because all of the brake force is acting on the swingarm - locking out the suspension...
Not a DH bike

Rode my 575 on a DH run that I normally shuttle on with a much heavier bike (about 17 pounds heavier).

I found it flexier then the normal DH and I was bouncing off of more stuff. Was running my stupid wheel build (mavic FR rims and very light DT spokes and 2.4 tires) so that could have been contributing to the flex. And lots of rocks and roots.

Been riding it pretty hard other wise on more XC-ish stuff (lots of roots, rocks, sudden line changes, MX ruts, ups and fowns) and never notice any flex, even when railing corners and making 'braaaaapppp' noises.

Haven't noticed brake jack.

How was your rebound set? My last ride on the hardtail, I was bouncing off everything, totally blew my confidence. When I got back to the trailhead I noticed my rebound setting (it's on the bottom of my fork) had been moved to the highest setting. Either someone was messing with me or I hit something (maybe a big bug while perched on the Yakima rack?).

I've got a Pike, which evidentally uses the same internals as the Revelation, and I love it. The U-Turn is nice to have if you climb a lot or do tight twisty trails.

I'd vote for the RP23, especially if you weigh more than 185. The DHX-Air needs a lot of pressure for anyone 185 and above. Another consideration for me was that PUSH doesn't work on the DHX-Air, and after having my last Fox Float PUSH'd, I am definitely wanting to get my RP3 worked on by them when it needs serviced.

As for the Pearl, I know someone who got one for their 5Spot, but immediately got rid of it as it had some problems. I'm interested in them as well, but sounds like they aren't quite ready for primetime just yet.
Dumb question of the morning....

Can someone please define "brake jack"?

I'm over 200 pounds fully geared up and have taken the Yeti down the ski resort I frequent during the summer and never noticed anything "odd" like the rear flexing alot.

Yes, listen to Ant... He told me to get one too and instead I had to research it to death.... This is a great bike. I just can't wait to ride it. It's plush but firm. I don't notice any flex from the bike, but the XM319 wheelset I am not too impressed with (comes on the enduro). Once you have this bike dialed in, it's just amazing. You can't beat the price either. Check out the prices between the component groups with other bikes and you will see that the value is unparalleled. Call Will at fullcycles.com and get a quote. Several of us here have bought from him and he has the best prices and service. You will need to call him for the best price though.

Brake jack refers to the tendency of some suspension designs to stiffen up and not work the same under braking.

Horst-Link (Specialized, Titus, older Turners, etc) were supposed to be the best about resisting this, but since Turner has gone to the TNT people are rethinking it.

I had my 575 at the ski resort last weekend, and rode some steep & rocky stuff and never once noticed any stiffening of the suspension. I am very aware of how it feels, my old CDale Jekyll was really, really bad about it. The 575 is such a highly tweaked single-pivot, I find it hard to believe that it is a single pivot at its core a lot of times.
