Which of these have you looked at and/or would recommend as a very muddy/ muddy / overall XC front tire :

Tioga Black Turtle XC Mud (1.90)
Maxxis Medusa (1.55)
Hutch Spider (2 or 1.85)
Michelin XCR Mud (2.0)

to replace my Bulldog - not a mud tire, not ever, not in front (ouch)...

Quite a range of tires on your list and you left off my two favorites:
  • Panaracer TrailRaker 1.95/2.1 Does it all.
  • Schwalbe Black Shark Mud 2.1 (not as good on hard surfaces. Does well on roots/rocks)
Your list:
  • Black Turtle: Have not ridden it.
  • Medusa 1.55: Very narrow (40 mm). Kick @## is deep mud and better than most overall - if you can handle the width. Lacks great climbing traction. The 1.80 may be a better choice (the 1.55 is discontinued).
  • Spider: My favorite most-conditions tire. Good in mud unless it is sticky.
  • XCR Mud: Same tread pattern as the old XL S. Another good most-conditions tire. Not a pure mudder but better than most XC tires.

How difficult is it to order from the UK? The TrailRaker is Panaracer's best seller there and one of most popular tires overall.

Easy, but
a) 5 pounds shipping
b) my wife gets the mail - suspect packages are hidden til xmas
c) going to the LBS lets me drool on other stuff

but i do support e-commerce (it's my job at risk) not just for one item - now if i can find that wish list somewhere ....
