This is just a question out of curiosity. During my morning commute the other day I got into a situation where a part broke and it would have been nice to have had access to a bike shop. There are several on my route but none of them open before 10:00 (I managed to improvise and move on).

So, I was wondering whether, now that more people are using bikes for their morning commute, any shops were catering to the commie crowd by opening earlier, carrying more commie-specific items, or doing other things for the commie crowd. I really haven't noticed most bike shops doing anything like this.

From the title, I thought you had one of those Russian track bikes that the shops didn't want to work on.

Not that I know of. I keep enough parts to fix most anything, or other bikes. I carry the tools needed to fix most anything. An extra tube, some chainring bolts, some chain links. I ride fixed gears usually so it's all fairly simple. Worst case would be something with any of the bearings getting screwed up, but I usually get good quality bearings to avoid issues.

Sorry, I thought Commie was an acceptable shortening of the word commuter -- most I know use it all the time.

I also carry just about anything I'd need, but this was kind of a freak thing and it would have been nice if I could have just bought the part. It wasn't a critical thing that would stop me from getting where I was going, but all the same. It just seems like the closed shops I ride by could make an extra buck by opening an hour or two earlier.

I don't believe enough commuters would provide business to make a 9am opener worthy. Commies are trying to get to work and most commies would have to arrive at work by the same time of the LBS opening time.

I told some of the guys at my LBS about this thread and they were floored...at first... but then said it would be worthwhile in larger cities like New York where the shops were close to downtown and the riding scene was large enough.

try china, ever since that whole hitler thing china has pretty much has a monopoly on this market.
Hitler was a facist and hated communists. He was from the national socialism party. Communism is a populus based planned economy and fascism was actually more business orientated and would be more comparable idealistically to american conservatism ideas on economy then china. Russia on the other hand was communist in after the first world war up to the early 90's, before and after hitler. Though what we call communism there is a corrupted version of socialism. Hope that has expanded your knowledge a bit.
