Christmas gift for my son. Looked at Ibis, Giant, Transition, Canyon, YT, etc and landed on Commencal.

He rides a lot of bike parks, went 20+ times just in the last couple months. We're in PA so there's some local riding sprinkled in too, which is the only reason we're not doing a DH bike.

He's 5'7 130lbs and doesn't really do anything huge as far as jumps/drops. He likes riding tech trails at the parks though.

Just looking for feedback from any owners and if you've had to choose between the two.

Thx!

How old is he?

Nukeproof Mega 275 Elite Carbon is in stock at the moment in size large. 5'7 is the bottom end of that sizing so it will fit as he continues to grow. 4.5K

Clash Ohlins Edition is in stock size M is equivalent to the L above for 5.2K

Clash is slightly better specced, but alloy frame. Both pretty similar geo though and very capable. The Clash has a coil shock so you may be a bit more difficult to tune the rear end to his weight, the Mega has air so a lot more straightforward to setup. You wont get another Clash before next year sometime.

I like Nukeproof and Polygon, but my son is deadset on Commencal. Not my first choice, but no complaints from me. He's 16 and probably close to done growing. I'm 5'7 and he's got similar proportions, hit the same height and shoe size at the same age I did, so I don't envision him growing much taller. Certainly possibly, but I'll take my chances.

Got a medium Meta AM SRAM 2021 for $3k and a 12/13 delivery date. It's plenty big with some space left to grow. Not a great wheelset, but he could ride em til they're toast then upgrade later.

I think at his age, at his skill level and the terrain he'll most likely ride, and of course my budget and all factors combined, it's a solid bike at a reasonable price.

I'd personally have gotten a Clash cause for bike parks I'd prefer the extra travel and 27.5 wheels, but he rides a good amount of tech up here in the Northeast, and really preferred the bigger wheels.

So many great bikes out there, glad I'll have one for him on time for Christmas. He's really a good kid and I'm happy for him. He's thinking he's gonna have to pay for half, but my wife and I decided to pick up the tab and he can use the money he saved for upgrades or if he takes my advice put it in his Roth IRA.
