hi there,

looking for some local advice here. There are 3 of us coming for 2 weeks from uk mid sept. We've been riding 2 years and like rocky stuff but not too challenging/scary. Plan is to drive from denver to fruita and from there we have one week to see the area before we spend a 2nd week based in breckenridge. So, can you guys give us some ideas about what to do with week one, should we just spend a week at fruita ? is there enough to keep 3 relative beginners occupied or should we do couple of days here and there on way to breckenridge and if so where should we stop and ride ? One of us has a heights problem so please no rides on ledges close to certain death drops please ! By the way we'll all be on full suspension bikes, intend to stay in inns/hotels/motels not camping, and like places good to shop/sightsee etc too.

Watch the ledges

There are a lot of great rides for beginners on the Western Slope. I would stay away from the Kokopelli Loops (Mary's Loop) area if you don't like ledges. Mary's is a great ride, but the is certainly some exposure.

Rustler Loop is easy and very little exposure. It is short (3 miles)

The rides north of Fruita in the 18 road area are gradual uphills with rolling singletrack. Joe's Ridge has some exposure to it, but the others should be ok. I would recommend riding up Prime Cut and Down Kessels run to start. if you like this you can go out Western Zip and down either Kessel or Prime Cut.

If you come over to Grand Junction try Lemon squeezer/ Miramonte Canyon.

You can go back to Fruita through Colorado National Monument for some sightseeing.

September Mountain TIme

Fruita is nice but can still be hot in september. If the weather is nice go to Crested Butte. The leaves are generally peak around the third week of september in the southern rockies. Crested Butte has amazing rides for all levels. Its around 31/2 hours from fruita.
