I have an 05 Coiler and am looking to upgrade my front derailleur (Deore) to an LX to match the rear. Is this considered a top or bottom swing derailleur, being that the clamp mounts above the cage on the seat tube. I am assuming its bottom swing, but the more I read about it the more confused I got. This is an easy one for somebody out there.

I have the same question for my stock 2004 Kona Kikapu...I would like to upgrade my front Der to either LX or XT and I need the size and top or bottom...

Also, I would like to find a replacement with a shorter cage as the Deore seems to be a bit too close to the rear tire just asking for punishment. Any suggestions?

I would not bother. Really no performance gain. Front derailleurs either work or they don't. There are better uses for the money IMO.

My derailleur has been smashed up and reshaped, so I think its resonable to upgrade. Any have shorter cages than the Deore?

The way I replace a front derailleur is to take the old one to the LBS and ask "What ya got?" Have only had to replace one in 22 years of riding and that one wore out.

You have to get the correct clamp diameter, too.
