Hi
I'm a xc rider with a 4 inch full suss bike. Had a Rockshox Ario air shock give up on me.

Rebound non existant.

Thinking of putting a Fox Vanilla R in its place. Yeah I know its heavier, but I want reliability, limited cost of maintenance, and I'm simply going to tune it to my style and leave it alone.

Fairly agressive xc would be the best description.

Anyone done anything similar?

I used romic twin d coil shock on my tracer. It works just fine but coil shock weighed near two lbs heaveir. Considering it's a xc bike 1.5to 2 lbs is alot. So I got my fox rl shock "PUSH". It gave me that same coil plush feel with good rebound control and some platform added to it. Some frame uses air shock to take adv of progressive nature of the air spring. Othewise, frame may bottom easier when coil shock is used. Tracer has rising rate as its rear end compress. So having air shock made the suspension not use last 1/4" travel when sag is properly set with air pressure...progressiveness of the air shock plus rising rate nature of the frame design. With coil, my frame used greater amount shock stroke and bottoming was not an issue. Again, it depends on the frame design. If your frame has a rising rate like Tracer, it should work well.
