Clipless vs. platform pedals on the Fishers..

All the models above the Tassajara in the Genesis hardtails come equipped with clipless pedals. I was originally interested in the ZR9000 frame and better components, but I'm not ready to deal with the pedals. What are my options? What will it add to the cost of the bike to back up to platform pedals? ...is it worth the effort and expense?

If you ask your LBS to swap the clipless for a set of platform pedals, most will certainly oblige you that request. If they don't, just buy a set of $20 platforms and save the clipless for later when you are ready to use them. But if you don't want the clipless, ask your shop to put platforms on for you... most will do it without hassle because the clipless are worth more than most platforms, so the shop will be making out for doing it. But that is also why I would suggest you just buy a set of cheaper platforms and save the clipless for later, since they are probably going to be worth more and cost you more to upgrade later. The other side of that is that when you go clipless (if that time comes) you may want to use some pedal other than Shimano pedals, meaning the OEM pedals won't matter to you anyways.

Bought a sugar 4+. didn't want clipless so I asked the LBS to change it out. He did, and took off some money off the bike.
YOU can change pedals yourself with a wrench. Buy a set of platforms and keep or ebay the clipless. I think you should not be intimidated by the clipless and just try them first. Clipless is the number one thing you can use to improve your biking performance.
I bought my '03 Big Sur and since I didn't have my shoes with me but wanted to ride the bike for the weekend it ran me $15 to have a pair of platforms with clips installed on the bike. I'm using clipless now but not the pegs that came on the bike.

The platforms on the Tass are a bit better than what I got but you can get the platforms and the clips (cages if you prefer) for not much, even if you go retail.
if you can't get a deal on your platforms take the $20 you would have spent on platforms, sell the clipless on ebay, and then buy some crank bros mallets. i just got a set and they are great. you can use the platforms and when you decide you might want to go clipless you'll have the option.
Bought the Tass...

Well, I decided that, pedals notwithstanding, the Tass was the best deal for me. (A very understated light grey, but a cool paint job.) I rode it about ten miles home, and loved every minute. I can't believe that I've been beating myself up on an old clunker for sooo many years. This is pure pleasure. Heck, now that I have some decent gear, I may just head for the trails. Interesting note...I've heard folks talking about the Genesis Geometry, (one of the reasons I went with it) and at times it is almost disconcerting, being truly different. But that oddness only last a split second, and then I'm groovin'. Anyway, as for the pedals, I found some strapless clips at REI that I've been using for a few months, and I'm going to switch them over. Maybe someday I'll try the clipless, but this will work for now.
Thanks for all the feedback.

If you ride regularly on the trails the faster you switch to clipless the better. You will fall over a few times while you're standing still, but no big deal. Once you get used to them you will kick yourself for not doing it sooner. Do it today, stick with it, and you won't regret it!!!
