For some ungodly reason, I had the bright idea last week to yank the Time Atac pedals off my SS and throw them on my El Guapo. Not good.

Now, I've ridden clipless for years so I'm not new to them. But a little over a year ago, I made the mental leap that I was going to begin riding more tech. At that time, I swapped my bigger travel rig to flat pedals. After a few weeks of learning curve, torn up shins and a different pedaling technique, I began to love the flats.

I still swap back on forth as I run Times on my SS, but I only ride that bike on "easy" stuff (Hawes, MMP, etc.).

However, trying to ride Upper Cheesegrater clipped in when I'm so used to riding it on flats was like three monkeys humping a football. Total fail. What's worse, it didn't make the climbs any easier either.

Experiment over. Deity pedals reinstalled. Case closed.

I switch back and forth all the time.
But then, I ride clips on the road a lot.
Hairball clipped in is fun.

What could possibly be different descending? Are you constantly taking your foot/feet off the pedal all the time with the flats?

I was there for "the ride" and had the same problem, But I suck so I have no excuse. :D I think my main problem was my clipless pedals suck, and I had a HE!! of a time getting clipped in. Anyone that's ridden "U.C.G." knows if you stop you lose all your mojo! Well we had to stop a hand full of times for hikers and such. I must of rode 3/4 of that trail with one boot unclipped!!!!

To sum it up; some people are built for clipless and some are not. I'm not good enough to decide what side of the fence I'm on :madman: Till then I'm riding one flat and one cliples............Drew

Well, that's also why they make "downhill" clipless pedals, with very large platforms and other features that make it much easier to clip in. Trying to clip into tiny XC pedals can definitely be frustrating.

I find the exact opposite. Every pedal I have used with a platform + clip is a PIA to actually clip into. I prefer a pure platform or pure small clip.

I've used bigger platform clips (Atac Z) with the same results.

Instigating a clipless debate wasn't my intention. I know where my interests are, so it's not really a debate at all. I'll keep the clipless for the SS.

Enel: I suspect it's probably 80/20 mental/physical for me. The mental I won't try to explain, but after riding some serious tech clipped in, I can tell you that I do tend to move my feet around and weight the flats, which I can't do with clipless.
