NorCal MTBR's own Clintox (Amateur rider, turned pro mt. biker, turned race promoter) will likely surpass 1M feet of climbing in 2021 on Thursday. What an accomplishment!!! I remember reading about Mark Weir doing this... has anyone else in NorCal climbed 1 million feet in a year... on mostly dirt??

A typical dawn patrol ride with 5K+ footies:

Congratulations Clintox!! Great accomplishment!! It’s like a one year ride hahaha!

I’ve accomplished this twice. Once 2015 and last year 2020 rapidly got it done. 100% dirt or rock

Nice work! Someone needs to pay homage to Weir and do it with a 1x9 vp free. Coil suspension I believe too? Can't remember his set up for sure. Maybe it was a nomad1 actually?
Mark Hunter just completed it 2 weeks ago. Was injured and didnt start this year untill Feb. Retirked guy, hits Henry Coe 3-4 times a week

I think he was 1x10 on coil with a 38t up front. The pioneer of all dirt million club!
I too, ran a 38t but my bike was 28 pounds. Weirs bike was piggy 38 pound bike. Well over a million feet too. He’s alone on another level

Cory Sullivan did it last year, finishing with roughly 1.2 mil of elevation.

No kidding! Couldn't remember if it was 9 or 10 but that 38t would wreck me regardless. He was a total stud!

Not to mention knocking a lot of it out on those steeeeep Novato mountains (the Towers fire road?)... if I'm not mistaken.

Margaux Elliott did it last year in Aptos

Weir did it with an old Garmin 305 which was likely off by at least 20%, likely 30% so he never did a million feet vert. If you’re doing it with anything that doesn’t have a barometer and it’s on Strava, you’re off 15-25%. Your iPhone on Strava isn’t even close. Not sure what Clint uses but he’s a pretty phenomenal rider regardless as was Weir.

Weir hit the mil mark before a full year so it's more like he was whatever % over, not under.

Clint's Strava shows: "Garmin Edge 520 Plus"

I remember hearing Weir (and others who have done this) say that they knew haters were going to question the accuracy of their GPS, so they intentionally climbed 20% more just to quiet the nay-sayers.

He wasn’t lying, clearly there are some haters living in the past.

No hater here. I raced against Mark for many years and very much like him as a human. His total that year was somewhere between 1 and 1.1 million feet, still short. It was a promotion for Garmins new line of fitness computers at the time. They just were horribly inaccurate on the positive side, it’s very well known. I had nearly a million feet the year after on a 305, 965,000’ or somewhere around that, thought I was a badass. The next year on a 705 with a barometer, pretty much riding the same places and really close mileage I had 700,000’. Not quite as badass.

It’s super impressive, but not as impressive as someone who had a barometer and hit 1 million feet, as is the case with Clint and others, with a month and a half to go at that in Clint's case. Sorry fanboys.
