Chromag BA30 wheel weight misleading ???

4737 Views 38 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  D Bone
Bought a front rim from Chromag. Front wheel is the BA30 29”. They advertise the wheel as 624g.. says rim actually. I see. Wouldn’t this be misleading the customer ? Rim came In today and I weighted it and i actual reading is over 1000g. What gives ?? There are no other weight specs on the website but the 624g. I’m super disappointed:/:/ wanted a light alloy rim. Don’t want carbon. Anyone experienced this before ?

Are you saying what they delivered was only a rim and it weighed 1000g? Or was what came a wheel (with hub and spokes)?

Total wheel weight will obviously depend on number and type of spokes and nipples, so using rim weight as a base might not be intentional/misleading especially if the buyer can customize based on spoke/nipple selection.

I’m not familiar with ultralight wheels, but it does seem unlikely a complete 32 spoke aluminum wheel could weigh in at 624g (why get 32 spokes if you’re shooting for ultra-light, anyway?).

Agreed . If you look at there website , it gives you a chose to select from rim and completed wheel. I selected completed wheel. Website should show accurate weight of wheel. Only shows 624g. It’s ok tho. I’m still new to allot of this. Learning as I go. You have any recommendations for light alloy rims ?

It says rim weight on the website, not wheel weight…

29er rims vary from about 450 g for an XC rim to 650 g for a strong DH rim. 550 g is fairly typical for a trail/enduro rim. The BA30 is on the stronger end of the spectrum.

Totally depends on riding style, trail types and budget. Far better people on here to offer recs than me but all will ask those questions to start.

I am heavier than average (190 riding), ride primarily rough trails (East coast rocks and roots), more aggressively than average. I break spokes and rims. My last two wheel sets therefore have been Industry Nine. They are both strong and relatively light which also means they are expensive. No issues yet with either their Enduro 305s or Trail S 270s.

Thanks. I as well from East coast. Roots and rocks are my home.

About to buy the trail S 270. Great light rim for only 100+ more. Can’t believe it’s gonna be 22 week lead time tho. It’s worth tho. What part of the east coast you ride ?

The Trail S are great if you plan on staying at/under 2.4/2.5 tire. If going bigger, I would look at the Enduro S.

You can sometimes find them online ( at Competitive Cyclist, etc). If you’re going to wait 22 weeks - I suggest giving that business to a LBS to order.

I’m in the NoVA/metro DC area.

My front tire is 2.35. I9 are manufactured in Ashville which is like 40 min from me so it’s kinda supporting local business. But I will definitely call around and see. What tires you run on the hard packed rooty ground ?

I run a 2.4 Dissector on the 270 front. The rear 270 is 2.3 Minion SS but I often swap that for the 305 with a Dissector 2.6

Colorado Cyclist will build you a custom wheelset for less and you'll have it in under a month.

Thanks. Looked into it very nice layout. Doesn’t seem to specify weights ?

A wheel and a rim are two different things.

Right. If the description says "rim weight" it means rim weight.

You can go to prowheelbuilder dot com to check the final weight of your custom build. Handbuilt wheels tab > Custom Wheel Program and load up your components.

I did :) looking for a good light alloy front wheel boost 29”. Budget is 500. So far it’s hard to beat the weight and price of the trail 270. Kinda worth the wait.
