I am torn between the 2011 giant trance x4 and x3 it is obvious that the x3 has the better components I would assume just the price diff at my lbs is 600 dollars also I want to trade in my specialized 2005 hardrock comp which I payed 550 dollars for what would be a fair price to trade in or sell that for

You've got a 7 year old entry level bike. The very best you are going to get is a couple hundred bucks for it if it's in pristine condition. Your best bet is keeping it for a spare/loaner bike. That way you can still ride if your trance is in the shop, and have a bike for friends to ride with you.

If you've got the money for it, do the X3. You're getting a significantly nicer drivetrain, significantly nicer suspension fork and shock, nicer wheels, it even comes with tires that people buy on purpose. If you have an '05 Hardrock, presumably you've been doing this a little while, and the Giant is going to be getting hammered around on trails, not left to sit in a garage while the air leaks out of the tires, so go for it.

BTW, I agree with ICAsh - better to hang onto the Hardrock if you've got the space for it. It's nice to have a spare off-road bike, or you can use it to ride to work and run errands.

You don't need to rush it. Trek and Specialized, at least, do demo tours. Not sure about Giant. But you may get an opportunity to test some options in their natural habitat later in the season.

So I am a very happy young man :) went to my lbs yesterday new it was between the trek fuel ex8 and ex7 which is obviously a slight difference in components. Anyway went for the ex8 as it has the tapered headtube drcv rear suspension shimano set and elixir 5 brakes as opposed to the ex7. I couldn't be more excited. The bike should be in and built by next weekend and I can't wait especially since the forecast here in Maine is looking a lot dryer haha. Anyway I wanted to thank everybody for giving their opinions it was certainly appreciated. Anyway I will post some pics up asap.
