so i'm in a LBS, when the guy behind the counter notices my bontrager and says, "hey, you might want to see this"... proceeds to take me to the back of the shop and pulls down a frame from the ceiling-- a never ridden, in fact, never finished, bontrager mountain frame. :thumbsup: raw steel. you could see the file marks along the joints. some way cool gusseting and absolutely flawless welds. he thinks it pre-dates the race frames, though besides the gusseting it looked identical (to my untrained eye anyway).
he seemed to sidestep the question about how it was acquired, only saying it came from keith's garage.
anyway, kinda cool to see. thought you folks might appreciate it.

Oh, and please pm me which bike shop it's at.
They are pretty neat cleared. There was one last year on ebay, but I didn't go for it.
They were dealer demos - Bontrager made a number of them (and I think they were OR frames) unpainted and shipped them out to dealers to show the quality of what was under the paintwork. As Don Juan said, there was one on the Bay last year. TBH you could just strip any Bontrager frame and you'd have the same effect, but it's not quite as special.
