I recently purchased a Cygolite Mitycross 300. I went for my first ride with it last week and LOVE it! It's all I can ever see needing in a bar light. Problem is...I can't look through corners. And both the trails I frequent can be some fairly twisty son-of-a-guns in spots! I'm looking around for something small and inexpensive to go on the helmet. I'm thinkin about 100 lumens or so would be enough. I'm looking for a burn time of 4-6 hours to compliment the 3.5/5 of the mitycross. If money was no object I'd get one of the triden x lights for the bars and throw the mity on the helmet. Unfortunately...I'm on a very tight budget. Right now one of the two Cygolite MiliONs is topping the list. A smidge more than I want to pay being in the $100 ballpark, but it does meet the criteria. Anything I should consider? If there is anything a bit cheaper, say the $60-80 range, I'm all ears!! But know that I don't mind having to wait an extra month to be able to afford something that will be better.

This is quite a common question and you may have already found other threads about this by now. An LED flashlight is probably your best option, they are fairly light and you can carry a few spare batteries to extend your ride.

A pricier way is to get something like Exposure's Joystick. I have one and quite like it for the various bike specific mounts but it is too expensive for what it is and you are tied to the self contained battery that is not removeable.

Your best bet is to trawl through DX; www.dealextreme.com for a flashlight, helmet mount, a couple of sets of Li-ion batteries and a charger. You'll easily get that lot for under $100.

but like a lot of the gear on DX, some have had problems with them, others have been fine.

If you want a bit better quality of construction (and higher cost), look at flashlight options from Fenix, Eagletac or Four Seven's Quark range. You don't have to go for 18650 Li-ion batts, you could look at flashlights that use rechargeable AA's, such as the Fenix LD20.

I'm actually a shop employee, so I'll get something a little more mainstream. Looks bad if one of the employees is riding lights that the shop doesn't sell. And with my shop discount, I can get most of the name brand items at very competitive prices. You've looked on THIS forum and couldn't find anything substantial? :skep: Just my opinion but I really doubt if anyone working with you would care one way or another what light you are using. Now as to a REAL SUBSTANTIAL LIGHT...by all means, knock yourself out with that Cygolite. Far be it for any of us to recommend a light that might blow the doors off the Cygolites. I mean, that would be real embarrassing to the shop people.

jcmtbfreak, sounds like you have already made up your mind, so did you really need to ask? As for mainstream, I'm pretty confident that there are a lot more Trustfire TR801's in the world than Cygolite Millions.

At $129 retail, though they can be bought for less, that stacks up well against the Joystick on price. Against the DX torches, less so. The devil is in the detail and the Cygolite website isn't forthcoming. '3rd gen LED' could mean anything, though I suspect XP-E/XR-E/P4.

Contributors to one MTBR thread on the light have mentioned a pinkish tinge (always a little subjective), which, to me, is not a particularly useful tint for offroad. Inconsistent tint is not a good sign and doesn't suggest attention to detail.
