cheap bike for my fiance?

so my gf wants to ride around with me. nothing seriously offroad or anything. looking at spending very little (like 150-200). do yall think I should:

1) buy a cheap mongoose/schwinn/pacific from walmart/academy/target (wait....kawasaki makes mountain bikes?)
2) buy an $80 sette frame on pricepoint and build with my spare parts and other cheap junk (this could be fun)
3) buy on craigslist? (this is prolly best option)

shes like 5.4" petite, do I need to stick with a "women's" frame or does it really matter?

its not going to be abused or ridden constantly, so quality isnt THAT important

or i can check my 2 bike shops to see if they have anything thats a 2008 or something and hasnt sold and is marked way down, woohoo
I would either do a frame + all your extra parts, or craigslist or a combination of both. You could buy a 100 dollar bike on craigslist (any size) then transfer the parts to the Sette Frame which I am guessing is the Reken. Just make sure you buy a bike that has a long enough steerer tube, BB, seat post, and even the right front derailleur size.
yeah the reken is what I was looking at.
is it an ok frame?
OP- try posting this question up in the Women's Lounge forum. The women will prolly give you some good advice. I wouldn't build her up a "beater" bike if I were you. She might say it doesn't matter...but don't believe it. Just my .02 Get her something nice that you can afford.

I'm biased because I own on, but I am a 240 pound clyde and the frame holds me up I am sure your girl will have no issues with the quality of the frame. Lots of good reviews on the frame in the MTBR review section,

no it really doesnt matter, lol. shes trying to tell me not to buy one, and she'll ride some 20 year old cruiser we have lying around, which is utterly rusted and terrible. I'm gonna update her, just doesnt really matter how nice it is.

Try looking at performancebike.com. They have good bikes for ladies at good prices I think and stores to go to to look at the bikes.Good deals maybe too. Check their sales and policies. I think you can go to one of their stores and get a manager to order a bike in for you to the store for no shipping charges if they don't have one in stock. they also have a layaway plan and a maintainence plan if you need it. also a rewards program of some sort. You could prolly work out a good deal with them.(I still wouldn't listen if she told you it doesn't matter...:skep: ;) :) )
big problem at 5'4" is standover height...started my girl on a Mongoose Otero(?) and the bike was a huge value but even a mens small was just too high at the top tube. Sold it for NO loss and bought her a Speccy MYKA FSR Comp in XS...she loves it to death and can hop off any time without racking herself :D
if it really doesn't matter and you have confidence in yourself to build a good bike then i say build it up, it looks like thats the most economical way
