I have a stock 06 Trek 4300 disc. I want to change the tires to something with a less aggressive tread, something in the light XC range. My question is in regards to the size of the tire, here is what i have currently

Wheels Shimano M495 disc hubs; Bontrager Ranger alloy rims
Tires Bontrager Jones ACX, 26x2.2"
Can i get any size tire or does it have to be 2.2? What would be a good tire reccomendation?

THanks
Brian

I just went from 2.2 to 2.1. You can really feel the differnce actually with even that tiny amount of change. It all depends what type of riding your doing. I mainly just do mountain fire breaks/ single track xc riding so 2.1 or even 2.0 would be fine for me IMO.

Going any bigger will be determined by tyre clearance on that particular frame and your type of riding. As for going smaller there's no problem there, you don't have to stick with the 2.2" width. If you're looking for a better rolling/low rolling resistance tyre that will still give decent traction I would recomend the Hutchinson Python, they are excellent racing tyres that roll veryy good, yet have enough tread to hook up in medium aggresive conditions. Try them in the 2.0" size, they aren't the cheapest but they roll really well and last very long even if you do a lot of road with them.

Note the almost continuous centre tread.

Heck, you can fit 1.1 slicks if that is your deal......the reason the bike came with 2.2's is on a hardtail, the tire is the only suspension in the back.....small tires mean a harsher ride.:D
