Mount the shock, remove all pressure, and fully compress it. If you have safe clearance at bottom out, try it. Keep in mind there's still the bottom out bumper to compress.

I have a 190mm by 45mm shock laying around as a take off and was wondering if anyone has used a shock of this size stroke on a epic and been ok. I would like to use this one while I wait on repair. Any advice is appreciated.
I think I am going to have my lbs do it. Bent the derailleur this weekend it appears so need their assistance on that anyway. I will have them put it on and see how it looks/works. Thanks. Some have tried it in the big Epic Evo thread. I believe 42.5 works 45 might be pushing it but it looks like some have done it.
