Dropping this here for others that may be interested. I did a test ride on this today. Just a 25 miler, about 50/50 between pavement and singletrack. Things I like:
  • It rolls pavement on the stock tires much better than I anticipated.
  • It's a good climber.
  • The stock gearing on the GRX bike is better than I expected. It wouldn't be perfect for pacelining in a big group, but for 2-4 hour solo rides, I think it's good.
  • It's unflappable on our shitty spring roads (sand, gravel, bad pavement, etc.)
  • It handled singletrack quite nicely.
  • It climbed great on the dirt.
  • I had no issues with the slow speed handling, including tight and turny climbs.
  • It's the only drop bar bike I've ridden that I've done rock rolls and drops on.
  • It wasn't too bad on the descents, though the bike reminds you regularly that there's no suspension. Choose your trails and lines prudently.
  • I love the dropper.
Things to adapt to:
  • Tire pressures will be important. There were a few times where I felt I was bouncing just a bit on that back tire when the pavement got a bit wavy. Grabbing one taller gear and slowing the cadence helped a bit.
  • Brake and handlebar control is much better in the drops, but that's not a completely natural position for a mountain biker. Moving smoothly between the hoods and drops in all sorts of situations will be a good skill to have.
That's about it. I think I'm going to buy one, but need to check out a couple more things.

Anybody read the Flat bar Chamois review on Betamt that evil posted on instagram? Don't feel like paying for it

has anyone tried to stuff a bigger tire in their chammy? I'm thinking some 2.1" XC tires (52-54mm). With my 48 rene herse oracle ridge (but measure closer to 49.5 on 24mm wide rims) there is at least 6mm on each side of the tire so in theory the 2.1 should fit.

2.1 will not fit! Too wide!
That's the number one reason why this bike is not on my list. I emailed Evil a while back, not to complain, but to give a friendly suggestion that a little more tire clearance would put it on my shopping list. To Evil's credit, they responded back fairly quickly. They felt that 50mm was adequate, and that I might be surprised by its capability with tires of that size. However, they also said they listen to feedback on their products. So if you want a Chamois Hagar with more tire clearance, let them know!

Yea but I don’t wanna buy a new bike! Lolol or a reason to buy another bike. An evil chammy//open wide mash up could be really interesting. Fits 27.5x2.4 slack the front end.call it a wide open chammy.

The bike is plenty capable with my 48 Rene herse Oracle ridge! It definitely does what I intended it to do. As soon as the bg rock n road 48 is available I’ll try that too!!!

I put on the panaracer firecross 45 but casings measure closer to 42 but the outer most knobs are 48… the tire is a roost machine so much traction I was popping wheelies like mollies at a rave. The low volume tires were not the business compared to the Rene herse.

does anyone know of a late model Mtb tire in the 1.95 or 2.00 range? I think maxxis makes an ikon? But I’ve yet to see any in stock anywhere… it seems the Mtb tires have bigger knobbies than gravel knobbies if only a mm or two
