Chameleon rear derailleur issues......

747 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  FrontRanger
I have noticed that when in the two smallest cogs and riding through rough sections of trail(i.e. rockgardens) the top of my rear derailleur(XT) is knocking the hell out of the chainstay? It sounds horrible. Downshifting resolves it but is not really a solution. Is this normal? Is the sound normal on an alu. frame? I am coming from a steel frame and never noticed the issue.

onboard all is well, handles like a dream. I'm going to convert my Chameleon to a single speed to quiet it up but first I need to get another frame for my geared MTB, either a chromoly HT or a Blur.

Figured all was well. Might throw something on the underside of the chainstay to quiet it down a bit until my legs are ready for SS.
Crank the spring tension screw all the way in- ride the bike- see if the deraileur keeps banging. If not, back it out until it starts hitting again (you could pre-maturely wear out the spring if you keep it cranked) and then crank it in 1/2 turn so the banging stops. Alis, I use an old innertube instead of a lizard skin guard which quites it down quite a bit. Finally- if that doesnt work, switch to a SRAM setup...their RD is set up differently than Shimano and does not have the same banging issue....

Thought about going ahead and switching to SRAM but will give the tension screw a check first. Thanks for the tip.
