Are the newer Race Face nine speed compatible chain rings compatible with older eight speed drivetrains? Are they the same?

I would think that they may be thinner, but the spacing would be the same using the older hardware.

Yes, you can run 9spd rings on 8 spd drivetrain no problemo.
You are right, 9spd rings are thinner, but I believe the base of the rings (where it's bolted on) are the same (I haven't measured), so you don't have to have different sized spacers.
