Hello,

What are the options for chain sizes for a single ring fron and rear (17T rear and 42T front)? Is there anything to consider other than the length of the chain? When I look at chains, they are 9,10, speed etc. Which one will fit best?

Depends on the chainrings and cogs. Usually a simple HG 50 will do or a PC 58 will do. Obviously if its single speed, a single speed chain, like the PC1 is what you want.

so it is not a single speed, but the same principle applies, I suppose, since there is no shifting. Why do single speeds take a different sized chain? And, what is different about the size? Is it more narrow? What about the length? Is the difference between 9 and 10 speed chains just length?

It really depends on the size(width) of the cogs. Are you pulling them off an old cassette? Did it come with the hub? Are they single speed cogs? Length between all(most) chainpins is the same. The width of the pins is what determines the size of the chain. 8 speed cassettes cogs are pretty wide, 9 speed is thinner, 10 speed is thinner still. Single speed cogs tend to be pretty wide.

The nice thing about single speed is that you can take a wide chain (PC1) and runn it on pretty much anything. However, if you use a really wide chain on cogs pulled off a DA cassette, you're probably not going to get the best performance.

So in general, use whatever chain is recommended to go with your cogs.

Rohloff - a 17t. I do not know what chain size they recommed - I'll have to check into it. I'm looking at a 42T outring from Specialite for the front. I've just gone up a size in the rear from a 16t to 17t and up to the 42t in the front (from a 38). Do I really have to worry much about different sized teeth on the front and rear rings? I'm guessing I could simply ride a 9 speed chain, correct?
