Chain line for Karate Monkey and Roholff Speedhub

1102 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Speedub.Nate
I'm new to figuring out a good chain line and I am thinking of hooking up a striped down XT or LX crank, but will need to buy a new Bottom Bracket I'm thinking a shimano ES71 73x??? not sure anyone have any guesses? This is for a Karate Monkey 22 (XL) with a Rohloff Speedhub.

Last time I tired to figure out a chain line I ended up with an extra BB.

Any better ideas for the crank/chain ring. I'm new to not using a derailer, and am not familar with anything remotely singlespeed.

If you're going to run the ring in the outer position, you'll want a 113mm ES-71 for an XT crank, or a 121mm ES-51 for an LX 572 crank. Either of those would set the outer ring at 54mm, which is the chainline for the Speedhub's 15, 16 & 17T cogs.

Hey, I got your email but your Mr. Ed address bounced. Try again or PM me if you feel the need.
Yeah that address died years ago.

Yeah that Ed address is long gone.

Thanks again Nate if I were to run the middle ring would a 118 work or would that not be far out enough?

The 118 + XT crank (or 126 + LX crank) would give you a 50mm chainline, so you'd off by 4mm in the front. You could partially make this up by adding 1.5 or 2 or 3mm worth of spacers under the drive side flange, but that would offset your Q-factor to the right hand side by a similar amount.

You could also go with an XT crank and a 126mm ES-51. That should put your middle ring right at 54mm.
