I run a 22t only and never needed one. Xo rear dérailleur with just enough chain.

How does that help prevent drops on the inside of the ring?

My experience is that you can do it if everything is right, but when the chain gets mucked up it will occasionally derail. No big deal to put back on but I found it annoying so I went to a third eye keeper and a bash ring. But the Paul was not available then, and my buddy has one and it is nice. Try it without anything if you want you can always add one later.
