Chain gets derailed

4529 Views 24 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Scott S.
I have a Giant Stance with Shimano deore shifter, 1-12 speed cassette and chain.
Chain ring is a Praxis 30T with 0mm offset.

The chain keeps coming off the chain ring towards the frame when I shift to the lowest gear. I have already adjusted the L screw even to the point where it barely shifts.

My bike shop says it's because it's supposed to have a 3mm offset. And they ordered another 0mm offset from Wolftooth and want to try that because they can't get any part right now.

I just want to ask if the SRAM 3mm offset I ordered below will be compatible with my bike.
Thanks

It depends what crankset you have. The one you linked is for a sram direct mount and isn't compatible with any Shimano crank.

I forgot to mention, I have a Praxis Cadet direct mount. But will the chain matter ? Thanks

You'll need a HG+ compatible chain ring for that chain.
I don't know if Praxis makes one but SRAM definitely doesn't make one.

So what happens if I use the SRAM chainring I ordered? Sorry I am a noob. I haven't had a bike for more than 25 years. Back in my days, you just bought a chain and slap it in (or at least that's how I remember).
.
any brand/type/style of 3-bolt DM ring will work on the crank
so the one you posted from SRAM with offset 3 is fine

the-one1's comment above says my chain is HG+ (Shimano CM-N8100) and chainring should be HG+ compatible, which the SRAM I linked is not - if I understand it correctly.
For Shimano HG+ chains you'll need chainring that matches the profile otherwise it may skip.

The praxis rings should be compatible with HG+ chains however they have a reputation of dropping chains as they don't use a narrow wide profile but instead offset alternating teeth to retain the chain.

The bike I have came with a praxis crankset and the first thing I did was just replace the wave tech ring. The general consensus on the forums was that there were a lot of reports of dropped chains even with an upper chain guide with the stock wave tech rings. I replaced the wave tech ring with a Wolftooth HG+ specific narrow wide ring. No dropped chains with the Wolftooth after 800 km of riding so far.

The shimano chain will work fine with the sram chainring.

Was yours a warranty issue?

Yes. I actually emailed them (not called like I said earlier) and told them I had a giant fathom 2 that the chain continues falling off on the frame side. Within an hour, I got an email back and the guy asked for my mailing address and told me that the bikes should have had a 3 degree offset and they would mail it to me for free. I had a new chainring about 4-5 days after my initial email. The invoice stated "warranty repair"

So that should have been a warranty issue with Giant. It's pretty unusual for a component manufacture to cover for someone else's f-up.
This is a common issue on some Giants with those Praxis cranks. I have a Fathom 2 with the cranks + 0mm offset chainring which has worked flawlessly for 2000 miles, while others require a 3mm offset chainring. I tried to put a 3mm offset chainring on mine and it rubs the chainstay before the cranks are tightened fully.

My guess is they revised the cranks and shipped Giant batches of both old and new, so some came with the wrong chainring for the 52mm chain line.

Praxis is very quick about sending out a chainring at no cost if you email their support.

Ok, I give up!

I installed the SRAM 3mm offset today and have tested for 2 hours. It has solved the chain falling off towards the frame. BUT now, chain falls off towards the pedal when I'm on the highest gear  .
How's your chain tension? When I built my bike my chain kept falling off frame side. Followed shimanos directions but the chain was too loose. Removed a few links and haven't had an issue since.

Now someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Sram 12 speed chains had larger rollers than Shimano 12 speed chains. This would make the teeth on your Sram chainring further apart than ideal. I don't know if that would actually cause any problems. Just a thought.

I had the same problem recently. My case was a slightly bent link. It was bowed inwards. I took a small flathead and twisted it until the link straightened. Maybe not your problem, but it’s something to consider.

Thanks all for your comments/suggestions.

The chain is good, nothing is bent.

The solutions I am thinking of are:
1. Put the 0MM offset chainring and maybe shim the cassette (if that is such a thing)
2. Change to "wider chain"
3. Put the 0MM offset back, and adjust the "L" screw so I am only limited to 11 speed which I did previously, but then, I really want the largest cog.
4. Keep the 3mm offset, and adjust "H" screw so I can't shift to the highest gear.

Anyway, I am going to bring the bike to the BS for warranty.

What else would you suggest I do before I bring the bike to the shop ???

call/email praxis. that would be my suggestion.

Yes. Praxis will send you a 3mm offset chainring made for your Shimano 12spd chain at no cost to you.
