Chain alignment problems

Turns out my derailleur problems weren't al my fault. LBS pointed out that the chain has big time alignment problems. Anyone else experienced this? Stock Enduro build, has SRAM cassette and rear der with XT front der. Is the BB or crank at fault? Looks like cassette needs to move out away from bike or crank needs to move in. LBS did its best but still can't get front rings to shift properly.

Hi Big Jim,

Check to see if there are spacers on the drive side of the Chainset - if using Shimano Hollow tech 2 there should only be one spacer on the drive side.

You could also try removing this spacer and putting it on the non drive side as crank arm clearence is not an issue with 575.

Check that the bottom bracket looks 'square' in relation to the frame when viewed from above.

It is not too unusuall for the chain to rub the cage at one end or the other of the gear range though, I think mine will not clear in both 1st and 9th in the middle ring - Inagine the probs when the big S decide to go 10sp!!!

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. Will gave me a flow shart of what to look for. I've been gone and haven't had a chance to check it out yet. I am wondering if the problem is in the rear der. as I installed that, it seemed to have some slop between the bolt and the hanger, maybe missing a washer or something?

I'm confident it will get worked out.

Jim
Hi Jim,

There should not be a spacer between the rear mech and hanger if you are using Shimano...not sure about SRAM.

There should be no slop though, I would have thought this would give you probs on the rear shifting too.

Front mechs can be really tricky to set up at times.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Chaser.
