Central VT sledding?

1363 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Pure
Last year or maybe the year before, I saw a sledding course advertised in the central Vermont area, maybe even at Millstone.

It involved a long (maybe a mile) sledding hill that you navigated on Hammerhead sleds or similar sled. I also think it was offered during a winter carnival of sorts.

Does anybody recall such a thing?

Last year Millstone's "Winter Carnival" included a sled run down a trail on Hammerheads. The trail was long, but nowhere near steep enough to carry any speed. Might have been better if it had been packed/groomed more thoroughly, but it was a tad lame with soft snow.

The Hammerheads are fun, but you need a firm, steep trail with plenty of room for sliding turns.

Hard Ack in St Albans would be a much better test ground:

The sledding hill at Goddard College in Plainfield is steep & usually packed down hard, but not super long. Rte 2 just west of turn off for school, you can see it from rte 2.
Thank you, all.

Good sledding at Hubbard Park in Montpelier and behind the elementary school in Stowe. My favorite sledding experience so far was at the Dartmouth Skiway (a small ski hill), in the middle of the night, totally hammered. Very icy, way too fast, not able to see where you were going, and if you tried to slow down, you either shredded your gloves or got blasted in the face with snow, effectively blinding you. Definitely not safe but quite a rush.

For whatever reason I didn't see your post until today. What you describe is exactly what I remember. Thanks for the input on the course.

I rode a hammerhead at Hard'ack for the first time two years ago. Great sled, great design...I'm just not into sledding enough to shell out the cash.

Thanks!

Good sledding at the Norwich ski hill in Northfield.

Vermont driver cited with pulling person in sled
Free Press Staff Report • Tuesday, January 5, 2010

A man with a suspended driver's license was pulling a person in a sled behind his vehicle along Interstate 89 in Williston at about 1 a.m. Sunday, Williston police said.

Officer Keith Gonyea said that when he located the vehicle he found its driver, Caleb Kelley, 23, of Williston preparing to trade places with the person in the sled.
Kelley, who had his license suspended for driving under the influence, received a citation to appear in court in February to answer a charge of driving with a suspended license.
Ha! I've done that on back roads, but never on the interstate with a suspended license.
some good sledding on the Perry Hill trails in Waterbury too. You can get some real good speed coming down that first hill from the tunnel.
