Central AZ flow trails?

3310 Views 32 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Thoreau
Hi people of AZ! New to the area and have been having so much fun out here on so mo, dawes and pass mtn. I love the tech out here, but there comes a time when I just wanna fly down some flow trails. Unfortunately, I think I know the answer. Prove me wrong.

You know something that will allow cranks and pedals a day off, lol

Also, when is Sedona not rideable? Do they get any snow? I know Flagstaff does, but isn't Sedona quite a bit lower in elevation? Sorry for the off topic questions, but it's my thread and feel like it's not worthy of a thread of its own.

thx

Red Mountain Rush is about as close to a flow trail as you’ll find. Some of the Browns Ranch stuff can be flowy ridden in the right direction.

But as you’re finding out, tech is king out here.

Go hit the Pinals or Prescott?

Haven't hit RMR yet as I dipped out early to hit Sunset. Wish I had continued to RMR because Sunset was blown out from the race a few days earlier. Jeff Lynosky dropped a video on it today.

Jayem, I'll check those out sooner than later I guess.
When was there a race on Sunset?

The MBAA Enduro race in Oct used Sunset Ridge as stage 2 for expert and pro.

Ah, so it was a while ago.

It seemed like the the trail could have used some serious love when I rode it, there were about 3 sections I didn't ride, due to just seeming to be too sketchy to risk without at least a lot more protection. Maybe seeing another rider on them would have helped though, since I was solo.

It's got a lot of potential and a lot of the work they've done up there on Hawes is just amazing. It always blows my mind how they are able to have a reasonable climb trail or trails at all through what is just a mess of boulders and rock faces, like Cactus Garden.

So did they race on it before it even opened?

Fish, definitely go hit Red Mountain Rush. Sounds right up your alley, and it's a stellar trail.

In the North East of the Valley, McDowell mountain park has 80 miles of trails and you can easily combine McDowell with Browns Ranch to give you a nice big loop at 40 to 50 miles if that’s what you’re interested in.

Sunset was blown out before it ever opened, we need rain, not the builders or racers fault I believe

thanks for all the replies. I know I just need to get out and explore, but the system of trails is pretty overwhelming to figure out what to start on and what to warm up to. I'm wondering if the rain we got (maybe thursday) did any help to sunset? I'm right there with you Jayem, there were 3 spots I HAB too. The reward wasn't worth the consequence. The 20-30 yards of rock garden that had washed out kitty litter everywhere was the main one.

i'm off to Red Mtn rush here shortly. this is what I planned https://www.trailforks.com/ridelog/planner/view/281885

I didn't realize the race was so long ago as the trail markers and banner were still up there last week.

That’s a fun loop you have there. I ride Hawes twice a week from my house so I end up with some easy miles and then some fun miles which inclued Alpe and RMR.

it was a fun run, but I ended up cutting out riverview and added twisted sister with mine. Also did an out and back on goat then back to rmr. Spur of the moment as I saw the exposed beauty of it. I gotta expand to the east side of the mountain more.

Same here. I always take the same route: up Hawes to Cactus Garden, then up to RMR. Whatever trails at the bottom tickle my fancy on the way back to the car. Im actually not sure I have ever ridden anything east of RMR.

Going down something like Goat and back up Huge Alps is pretty fantastic, Goat has some features, but they aren't all wacked out, the Huge Alps climb is relatively easy to get back up to the top (as in way easier than CG). Also circumnavigating around is pretty easy effort wise.

Last time I rode there a couple guys we chatted with recommended climbing up Alpe instead of Cactus Garden. I will have to change up my route next time I am out that way.

Funny you guys talking about Alpe. Last night I was thinking of using Alpe to do a figure 8 between Iron goat and High Ridge, via the orv staging lot on Usery Pass rd. Only comes up at 7 miles, but I have no clue what to expect as in time to complete. Also, what would you do 1st, IG or HR?
So in an effort to finally go find and ride Red Mountain Rush I started at the parking lot near the river (Granite Reef dam parking lot) and headed into the system. I ended up riding up near the microwave towers and then heading north up to Red mountain Rush proper. I think that northern section is Cactus, and it totally kicked my ass. That section heading north from the tower area, up to Red mountain Rush was harder than the entire climb up towards the towers. Every bit of it looks doable as it is cut nicely and relatively smooth but man, I was gassed on many of the sections and any bit of a rear wheel slip put me into hike a bike motion for 20 or 30 ft.

RMR was an absolute blast though. At the bottom I opted to take Twisted Sister back up to mine trail and up and over and down rather than the lower trail which I think is called Riverview. Could be wrong, I think it used to be called High Horse on trailforks about a year ago. From what I remember that section is fun but has a whole lot of ups and downs which require nearly 100% effort at times and I just thought going back through TS to Mine would be the better option. Plus it allowed me to ride Mine trail which I enjoy, rather than skirting around the back side.

Overall it was very enjoyable but I don't think I'll ever purposely choose to ride up Cactus again. That's pretty much a downhill trail, for most anyhow. The better way might be parking somewhere out on Ellsworth and hitting the system from there. I just live on the west side of the hills so driving all the way back there is not something I typically do.

Turned out to be some of the hardest 13 mi I've done in a very long time.

That’s the way I’ve done it as well. It’s a workout for sure.
