I just picked up a new set of wheels and, since it appears to be fairly straightforward, I've decided to install the cassette myself. Other than what I read on Sheldon Brown's site, are there any tips or tricks I should know before I do the install?

You only need a lockring tool, you will need to get a chain whip if you want to remove one. Check out the Park tool site, they have instructions. http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/FAQcogs.shtml

You can make a chain whip too...

Being cheap, and wanting to save my money for tools I will need more than once every two years (chain whip)...and not wanting to buy an overpriced piece of chain attached to metal...

Go to a web-site and look at a chain whip, you can make one of your own with a piece of 2X2 or other similiarly sized piece of wood, attach the old piece of chain to it (look at the picture) with a couple screws and voila --homemade chain whip.
