im using an american classic wheelset, im wondering if i'm better off building another wheelset in converting it to ss.

thanks

use a wide base cog (king, surly, etc.) and there will be no damage, on any (reasonable) freehub.
I would not say, "no damage," aluminum freehubs are designed for cassettes with carriers, even riveted cassette will do significant damage. Saying that, I am using a Surly cog on an aluminum freehub, which I know will do some damage, but not critical to it working (a thin steel BMX cog will really tear it up ). If you want to be sure there is no damage, use a cog with a carrier like HbC or a wide based aluminum cog, although they tend to wear very quickly.
