Carbon wheels

Is anybody running carbon wheels on their 27.5+ bike?

Is it a worthwhile upgrade to reduce weight, or would it be better to buy 29 inch wheels as the plus bikes seem to be going out of fashion?

My bike is a 2021 Trek Roscoe 8.
Thanks

Who cares what's in fashion if you enjoy riding it?

I build heaps of carbon wheels -- in 27.5, 29, and + -- to fit the way and places people ride their bikes.

Not so much fashion, but availability of 27.5+ tyres in the future if spending a lot on carbon wheels.
I dont see that you need + unless you have deep snow or sand.

In which case you need fat, not plus.

That's a fair point.

27.5+ tires are definitely being scaled back right now, but there are still lots available and I don't see why that would change in the next 3-4 years.

Someone will always offer 27.5" tires. And the low pressure and wide width will still be more confident inspiring than the latest and greatest compound of skinny tire, so for those wanting the confidence inspiring feel of a + or fat, they'll be able to get a tire. Maybe not the latest EXO, WT, HC, XYZ compound but who cares, those compounds are like 2% difference and air pressure/width is like 20% difference. (Disclaimer- Those numbers are totally made up with absolutely no relevance to reality. :) )

I ordered a few things from a shop in Europe last week including a pair of 27.5+ tyres.
They sent me 3 tyres. Not sure if it was a mistake or if they are getting rid of stock as they were on sale too.

For years I said that I'd never get carbon wheels because I'm not a good enough rider to justify the cost. Then a couple years ago I came across a deal on a used set that I couldn't pass up. I bought them with the full expectation that I'd flip them for a small profit after trying them out a while.

Now I can't go back. Just for a test I put my previous aluminum wheels back on the bike and immediately noticed a drastic difference. I was shocked, I didn't expect "someone like me" to notice such a difference. It wasn't so much the weight difference, but the ride quality. After getting used to the carbon wheels I could actually feel the flex in the aluminum wheels when I switched back. Again, I don't consider myself a great rider, don't race or ride particularly fast, and don't get big air - but if these disappeared I'd have to go get another set in a heartbeat.

My eBike is only a couple months old, my first new Mt Bike in 25 years. Anyway it has ENVE 27.5+ Carbon wheels. Rims are so deep that you cannot even see the spoke nipples. I have no idea how they even "true" them. With a little over 100 miles on them, they seem to do their job without any efforts on my part other than to properly inflate the tubeless tires mounted on them. It's my first set of carbon wheels so I'm curious to see how they hold up. I have zero fear of 27.5+ tires going away just because 29" are the latest craze...but with Mullet bikes still being built, I expect they will be around longer than I am.

BTW....26" tires are still readily available! I started running 26" clear back to the 80's!

Does anybody have any suggestions for 27.5 x 40mm carbon wheel sets, preferably in Europe?

I’ve got a 2021 Trek Roscoe 8 which has SRAM NX gears. I hear if I get a wheel set with SRAM GX compatible hubs and put a GX cassette on, it will give me more wheel options.

The bike is 141 boost, but can apparently fit 148 boost with spacers?
Does anybody know what I need to do this?

Thanks
I run carbon wheels 27.5 x 2.8s in a steel hard tail, ride quality is amazing.

Can't help with the "in Europe" part but I'd recommend you start with Mike in the second post in this thread - he definitly knows what he's doing and will steer you in the right direction even if you don't have him build you a set.

Ok thanks for that

Quoted for awesomeness.

I don't know if you mean a European company or just that you can get in Europe.

LB sounds like they can make what you want and looks like they can do it in 142 from a quick look. Should also deliver globally.

I was just meaning for sale in Europe to avoid big import duty as I live in Ireland.

Thanks for the link.
For me, the best part about carbon wheels is never having to true them. Had the same set for 3-4 years and never had to touch them.

Hey Lenny,

That is great to read....seeing as how my set cost as much as some Mt Bikes, I hopefully get the same confidence in my set as you do yours!
