Carbon wheel repair

So..... I'm smashing (literally) down my favorite descent. I don't get to ride it often because it's a dry ride only track... ie it's too steep and crazy to be ridden in the wet. I'm in the zone and fully flowing at pace.

I crank down the last bit of super tech and run a bit wide compared to my normal line. I'm on form so a just let it run and smash through the roots and hear a low crack..... I check the rear wheel and ah **** the carbon rin rim has been crushed in a couple of spots. Damn it. The rims are line 3 months old. I check the rear pressure. Way too low for the speed and size of the roots I'm hitting.

Righto. I need to keep these wheels going while I wait for a replacement rim. Time to bust out a carbon repair.

There was no problem seating the bead and the tire held pressure immediately. I went for a quick ride and smashed down some chunk including a pretty harsh square-edged concrete flight of stairs. Repairs have held. The wheel doesnt feel any different to the pre-crush wheel.

I'll be honest I'm pretty stoked how the repair came out. I was looking at the alternative of shelving the rear wheel until the replacement turned up in a month or so. Now I can schralp and shred with reckless abandon.

Now for the long-term testing.

1000m vert descending this morning with some damn harsh high speed root sections.
Rim repair still look good.

Did you loosen the spokes at that area for the repair? What layup glue?

No I did not loosen spokes. The rim was true so I left sleeping dogs lie and did the repair under tension.

West system epoxy resin.

Not that I can tell. Did 70kph down a hill on the road after my 1000m vert descending this morning with no I'll affects.

Done another 2100m of vert descending of some pretty gnarly root and pointy embedded rock tracks. The repairs are still holding with no sign of failure.

Carbon is so eco friendly. No fatigue limit and able to be home repaired, truly the responsible man's choice.

Had a minor crack in a wheel so that it wouldn’t hold air/sealant. Warmed it a bit with a hair dryer and flowed some Crazy Glue into the crack. A bit of sanding and good to go!

The bigger question is why is there a crack there? you might want to think about a strip or 2 of uni-directional across the crack to provide extra strength and reduce the chance of crack propagation. An old aircraft engineering trick is to drill a small hole at the end of the crack. This dissipates the stress riser and reduces the chance of further cracking. (obviously fill any holes drilled in carbon with epoxy.
