Carbon Fork on a Karate Monkey?

3613 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Norris_Hanna
Has anyone tried/ is anyone using a carbon fiber fork like the White Ind. Rock Solid fork on a Karate Monkey? If so, how do you like it? I am considering a fork such as this due to the rather harsh ride of the Surly fork. However, I am worried about drastically changing the handling charactoristics of the bike.

Thanks

That fork won't change the handling. The offsets and axle to crowns match close enough. I wanted to change the handling so I went with the On One carbon with 47mm of offset. It steers much quicker now and I like it.
I tried the Pace RC29 and I experienced brake squeal that I could not get rid of. On top of that it felt like the front end was too light. Plus the look of the KM fork is so much more pleasing. In the end I sold the Pace, re-installed the Surly and let a few pounds of pressure out of the front tire.

Were you using V brakes?
i put the white brothers fork on mine a month or so after putting it together. Much better, then dusters with Jones XR tires, more much better

the front end is much lighter but i ride a bunch of rooty uphills so it worked out great

Did the handling change any or did it feel pretty much the same as with the stock Surly KM fork?

No V-Brakes. Just Avid BB-7s. I was disappointed with the overall quality of the Pace too. I actually sent the first one that I ordered back without taking it out of the box. There were carbon strands that were not covered by the gel coat.

i've had to put myself out over the front more under power going uphill and over stuff, I think it handles better on the flat and downhill. I believe the geo hasn't changed, it's a weight affect, I could be wrong about that though i'll have to check

I would'nt have thought that a pound less weight would make that big of a difference in the way the bike feels. I was most concerned about bad geometry with an aftermarket fork and making an already good handling bike worse just to save a pound and get a bit more compliance. The White Bro's fork sounds like it's worth a try. Thanks.
