Can't Get Tire on Rim

754 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Mike679
I have been riding bikes my whole life. I have changed out dozens of tires. I cannot, for the life of me, get my new WTB Velociraptor (Kevlar) on to my rear wheel. I have used these tires before on these rims and have always been able to get them on with my hands. In this case however, I was actually developing blisters trying to get the last 6 or so inches of bead over the edge of the rim.

Any suggestions/tricks?

Let me guess, Sun rims.

Here is the link to the proper technique http://www.teamestrogen.com/articles/asa_levers.asp
use a lubricant

Try soap and water on the bead. It will dry up later without any residue. This won't help you on the trail if you have to remove it or put it back on again. For this purpose, I put a thin coat of silicone grease on the bead of two Michelins that were previously tire lever breakers. The grease doesn't dry up or hurt the tube/tire. Worked like a charm.

Got it on

Palms instead of thumbs=more leverage. Thanks for the tips.
