The subject kindof says it all.

If i opt to go with a external bearing crankset...can I acheive a SS chainline of 54mm??

I'd probably go with an XTR...I know of no comparable crankset.

I have a WI/Phil Wood setup now...but I can't get my crankarm bolts to stay put...

on a 68mm bb shell, my Hone can achieve 55mm chainline if you put a 2.5mm spacer on the driveside shell. and that if you run the chainring outside the spider.
i have a 73mm bb shell...

I assume i'd run the SS ring in the "big-ring" position...

would it work?

Check the description on the photo. I got 55mm with a King external bearing BB, Surly Mr. Whirly cranks, ring on the inside of a SS-appropriate spider. Rear was 54.5mm.

Wow Morgan, that's some serious Gold...

Didn't know Stan could/would custom anno.. nor Surly..??

But, ok, good to know, I CAN acheive it, if I need to...my Rohloff requires the 54, so that's a serious factor. I'll try methods from other thread, re: slipping crank bolts to try to salvage my Phil Wood/WI setup, which I am otherwise quite happy with.

I had a local anodizer strip and anodize a bunch of that stuff gold.

Sounds like you can get the right chainline with an external bb. Good luck!
