Another fascinating "help me find the creak" thread.

I think I have chain creak (as opposed to Cane Creek). Is that possible?

Here's the deal. When I ride with a freshly cleaned and lubed chain, my bike is silent for the first mile or so. Then it'll develop a kind of creaking/thunking sound. It only happens when I'm pedaling, and it occurs in all ring/cog combinations. So, I'm thinking it's gotta be the chain, since it seems that the creak does not occur when the chain has a ton of fresh lube on it. But I was not aware that a chain creak (as opposed to...oh, never mind) was something that happened. Upon visual inspection, the chain looks fine- no apparent deformity or damage.

Your thoughts?

Chains can creak, but I would also take a look at the cassette and the locknut. If the nut isnt tightened down that can start some noise also. A quick check on the chain would be just to put another chain on and see if the noise persists. Running down noises is pretty tough. I just put another bottom bracket in to try to get rid of some intermittent creaks and it didnt seem to help.
