have a chance to buy a nice 1x1 frame cheap... can they be made to run gears? A Hone set up perhaps?
Hone and Saint will not work, at least not easily. On these, the der connects directly to the hub through the axle, this puts the der knuckle pretty high in comparison to other ders, so the flange on the dropout won't allow clearance for the der. You could cut off part of the flange to make it work. If you're buying a new frame this might not be best, since you'd likely void the warranty, but if it's used and you're careful it shouldn't be an issue.

Ditto Jay...'s idea

I've used a deraileur tug system and a 22/32 combo in front with the front derailleur. You'll need a cable stop problem solver to create a cable stop for the front derailleur cable.

But I gotta say it, "THAT'S BLASPHEMY, SHAME ON YOU!"

FYI; Guy came in yesterday wanting me to put a Sturmey internal gear disc hub wheelset on his, so you can always try that route too.
