Calling on Enduro peeps - Enduro Comp '09 or '10?

there is probably no real answer to this, but, i'm going to try....I'm a longtime, XC mountain biker (weekend warrior) riding state parks/trails around Boston.

The last couple of years, i've found out how much fun it is to hit the trails/single track downhill at area mountains like Killington and Mt.Snow, as well as a place like Highland Mountain Bike Park (which is pretty aggresive d hill).

So i've gone there to places like that - downhill places - and rented, while still riding local trails (like Blue Hills) on my reg rig...Now tired of paying those rental prices, i'm selling the XC Spesh for something that at least approaches that "do it all" bike (though i know there is no nirvana with that). Thus, I've found a good deal on an '09 Enduro SL Comp - and it's on the way. But i'm having second thoughts.

Here is my deal. I do downhill at those places, and i hit the downhill pretty hard, but i'm really not doing any drops - definitely none that are large. I just like bombing downhill, and also being able to climb back up the switchbacks at these lift access mountains (as well as use a bike on my local trails).

Here is my question point blank. Is the '09 Spesh Enduro Comp enough bike for that? Someone told me "the '09 is not, but the '10 version *is*" .....and yes, the '10 looks, with the front end especially, burly-er (maybe too much to climb though?)

i know it's all a balance - ie what riding will i do more. My fear is getting the great deal on the '09, but having to have it in the shop alot and ending up wasting money there anyway, as I've beaten on it on the downhill. Of course my fear with the '10 is it's too heavy for when i'm around home....see, no easy answer? So basically, I average being in the mountains for downhill like 5 or 6 times a summer/year, tops. The rest local trails.

But regardless i'd love to hear your thoughts on whether i'd kill an '09 Enduro Comp on that..and any suggestions you have for me. thanks!

I think last years bike was "enough" bike last year. So it should be "enough" this year, regardless of the '10's. Aside from the different shock placement, you get less than half an inch more travel.

Something has to change in order to create more sales. A "new" design will do that.

you can not go wrong with either one , I like the 07-08 Enduro because of the E-150 fork, ---your 09 wont have the E-150 unless its the S-works build.
Getting a good deal on the 09 is a great find , you wont be sorry.

thanks...that makes me feel better about it. It's on the way to the shop, and if possible, i'd obviously rather get the '09 since it's about 800.00 in savings from the '10. But again, if it was going to break on the "light" downhill i do, then it's not worth trying to save that money.

If it was me, I would ditch the noodly 32 fork and sell it. Then get a lyrik or a fox 36. I rode an 09 and the front end felt flexy. I run a 36 talas on mine and is extremely stout.

I was recently considering an 09 Enduro Expert "test bike" but bought a 2010 Enduro Expert when my LBS had a Thanksgiving sale. It was a no brainer for me...lets just say the price was right!

I was looking at getting an Enduro for over a year or so and did my research.

BIG +1 here, and I ride in the same region as you (RI & MA, etc.)

Edit: I suppose it depends on how much money you'd be willing to spend, but I'd say either grab an older Enduro with the e150, or get the 2010. Either way you won't go wrong.

the 09 is not going to "break" doing what you do.

it has two shock positions, effectively giving the bike two personalities. though you'll likely favor one and stick to it, its nice to have the choice.

It is a tough choice because you may find the fox 32 isn't as stiff as you'd like. You may find it to be fine, though. If you eventually feel like replacing it, that will probably eat most of your savings with getting the 09 over the 2010. So I guess you've got some thinking to do.

You did say its already on the way though, you must have the option to back out eh?

As the others said, the '09 with the 32 Fox upfront is not all that great....(but maybe you can score a deal with the shop to replace it with a 36 before you buy the bike....to get the benefit of the "new" trade-in value on the 32...ask them and see). I don't recommend sticking with that 32...it will be fine for your XC days, but NOT your uplift days.

The '08 with the e150 would be good for what you want to do, but the 2010...even better! I had the pleasure of trying one for the first time the other day, and although I did not get a long ride on it, it definitely is much more than "something new for the sake of sales". It simply feels awesome - one of the best "all-mountain, light enduro" bikes I have ever ridden for sure.
And as for your fears of climbing with it....if you can't get this thing up a hill, then you need new legs, not a new bike...

It's lighter than the old model (even though it looks MUCH burlier in the flesh), and climbs at least as well (if not better).

My 2010 Enduro is stiffer than my 2006 Enduro, and so far, ramps up through travel just as well (06 had coils). 2010 pedals loads better.

I'm going to get DH wheels & tires for lift serve days and call it done.
