Hi guys,

I posted this in the suspension section, but have not received a response yet; was hoping someone hear would be able to help me out :)

Sorry for the vague and extremely newbie question, but I'm about to look at a fork a person on Craigslist has. They're unsure of the year, but it's a Fox 36 Float RC2. It apparently doesn't have a scratch on it. The guy seems unsure of everything besides that; infact, he didn't even know it wasn't a Talas until I made him look more carefully. I haven't bought a frame yet, but I am thinking about putting my own rig together. It would be more aggresive AM or freeride suited. I weigh 150lbs and am 5'10.

Can anyone shed some light into what I need to look for to ensure I don't get ripped off? Also, how do I tell what year it is? Etc. Thanks!

I really don't know as I've yet to buy a used fork that wasn't attached to a bike, but I would definitely ask the seller where he got the fork. Usually just asking for explanations will reveal quite a bit about a used product and remember, if he says something that makes you weary, think about the stuff that he isn't saying. Ask as many questions as you can think of.

I kinda figured, but at the same time, $300 for a practically brand new Fox fork is intriguing. He claims it was off a buddy's bike and that he himself doesn't know much about bikes.

Unless you know a decent amount about forks I'd take it into a shop and ask them to check it out before you buy it....

No point in buying a fork that has blown cartridges and have to end up spending another $200 to get it working properly

Sounds suspicous... the guy doesn't know the year, doesn't know he's got a top of the line fork, and it's from a 'buddys' bike.

Sounds like a part from a stolen bike.
