I'm looking to buy a road bike for mostly casual use. I plan on riding on paved roads for the most part, and will be riding at most 10 to 15 miles.

I won't be riding every day but I want a bike that will last.

What should I be looking for in a suitable road bike? My budget is around $400 to $500. Can I get a good quality bike for that much money?

for that pricepoint, and primarily roads you will be just fine. I would suggest visiting a local bike shop and take a look at some of the "hybrid" bikes - they will have road wheels/tires but a more comfortable upright sitting position.
