I've ordered a new fork, and I'm going to need to set a crown race on it. I'm thinking to order a Park, CRS-1 Crown Race Setter, but that's a $76 item. I don't mind spending the money, but is it also feasible to set the race using a piece of, say, PVC pipe from the hardware store? What are the pros and cons of the two methods? Is the CRS-1 a "nice to have", or is it a "must have"? That's really the question I'm getting at.

There is a guy on ebay who machines his own crown race tools out of aluminum for $6. I have one and it s a handy little tool:

Cool! Thanks Joe, for the link. Looks perfect for what I want to do. The guy has a complete toolset (press, remover, race-setter) for $45. I ended up buying that. He should give you a commission .
