She likes her bike so much she want to go to our local loop everyday! She feels much more confident both going up and going down with her Burner. I'm also so in love with these bikes that I'm seriously considering grabing one of the few Burners left for my XC racing needs :p (or maybe not... :rolleyes: )

Extra Large, Extra Gay

I upgraded from my old-old school rigid this summer; it's a great bike. I have completely de-stickerized it--everything that can be peeled has been (except for the head tube emblem). I did feel a bit guilty peeling the down tubes, but once I got started there was no turning back.

* Main purpose: uh...I ride it?

* Trail terrain: Smooth (or rough), dry (or wet), dusty (or greasy/slippery) long climbs and descents (or long climbs and descents) in Santa Cruz mountains (Northern California)

* Frame Size: XL
* Frame Year: 2004
* Color (frame/rear triangle): red
* Shock: 3-way
* Fork: 2004 Talas
* Brakes: Deore
* Brake Levers: Deore
* Cranks: XT
* Shifters: XT
* Front Derailleur: XT
* Rear Derailleur: XT
* Chain Dura Ace
* Pedals: Frogs
* Stem: Easton EA70 120mm
* Handlebar: Weyless (weigh more)
* Seatpost: Weyless (ditto)
* Saddle: Sella Italia Turbo new in 1986; pilfered off my rigid.
* Bottom Bracket: XT
* Cassette: XT 11-34
* Headset: Cane Creek S6
* Grips: Supergo Powergrip (the one house-brand part I really like)
* Front Tire: Specialized Roll-X 2.0
* Front Rim: Sun Rhyno Lite
* Front Hub/Skewer: XT
* Rear Tire: Specialized Roll-X 2.0
* Rear Rim: Sun Rhyno Lite
* Rear Hub/Skewer: XT
* Seatpost Collar Turner OEM
*** Build Weight: A bit porky but I don't want to weigh it.

* Future Changes: I plan to drop some weight with a Thomson stem and setback seatpost, Easton or Maxm bars, and a Sella Italia Flite (or similar) saddle. I also plan to rebuild the wheels with a lighter rim (not spec'd yet). Chris King HS when/if the Cane Creek poops its drawers. And eventually I would like to replace the brakes with some high bling-factor unit. But other than a bit of extra weight, it is hard to complain with the build...everything works well enough (except the pilot, and that is not the bike's fault now, is it?)

EDIT April 2007:

I rode it as built above for one year, then started tweaking some parts:
Easton Monkeylite carbon bars replaced the Weyless aluminum
ODI Ruffian grips replaced the Supergo slip-ons (but I did like those quite a bit)
Thomson Elite stem replaced the Easton
Thomson setback seatpost replaced the Weyless
Specialized Alias 143 replaced the Sella Italia saddle
CK/Mavic 717's replaced the XT/Rhyno Lite wheels
XR Rockers and a RP3 replaced the stock rockers and Manitou 3-way
XTR calipers replaced the Deore M525 calipers; I am still running the original disks and levers.
Of course, I added Salsa skewers and QR seatpost collar
Been through a lot of tires and a chain or two...right now running Spec. Adrenaline/aka Resolutions, great for my riding; and Shimano Dura-Ace chain.

With no stupid-lite parts I got the bike down to 27-3/4 pounds. I've also carved almost 30 pounds off of my own sorry carcass, so the whole thing goes up hills much better than before.

Oh...a 2007 PC comment about the subject line for the new homers...in 2004 red bikes were jokingly considered a bit swishy...if you know what I mean. Not as much kidding about that these days. But I'm stuck with the title of the post.

What a ride difference from the Superlight! The Superlight was a great bike, but in combination with my riding skills I was feeling its limitations. The extra inch of travel on the front end (Atom 80 to Vanilla 105) is a very big difference. The rear end has 'improve' my riding skills immensely. The Tamarancho ride in Fairfax has 56 switch backs. The best day of riding for me was to make 53 on the Superlight. My maiden ride with the Burner physically felt like a weak ride, but I made 55 of the switchbacks.

Simply stated the Horst linkage rides better than the single pivot design of my former Superlight. My buddy who bought the superlight came off an Otis Guy beam bike. He loves the superlight and I'm very sure that he would toast me on any ride. (It's the rider not the bike, but a good bike will help a weaker rider.)

Hey rmac...

How do you like the Marathon S 105 on the Burner? I'm 99.9% sure that's what I'm going to pick up too. My Burner will arrive in the next day or so. I have a Marathon SL on my other bike and I dig it. I would imagine the S version feels basically the same except maybe a little stiffer.

Thanks for the info

It's good. I have only got about 12 rides on it and it and no complaints so far (it may not be completely broken in yet). It feels significantly plusher than the Fox Float 100 (could just be user error on my part though) and is way stiffer than my '01 RS Psylo SL. I use the adjustability a lot and love the quarter turn only to make the change. I think your SL is air and the S is coil - be interesting to see if you feel the S is more plush. Since the S is an '04 and discontinued, you should be able to get it for $300 or less!

Enjoy!
