I would like to build my own bike but wanted to get an idea of how much money i can expect to spend on tools alone. i have craftsman wrenches all sizes, and basic hex keys, but how much do you think i would spend on tools to get the job done??
i've never built a bike before.

When I built my first bike, I bought a tool kit for around 60$ CDN.

It had everything I needed (ext. BB wrench, chain whip, crank puller were the main ones).

However, for things like BB chase/face, headset press (possible to make own), brake tab face I took it to my LBS as those tools were expensive.

What is your build list?

Assuming the wheels are already built, these are all what I used:

also a work stand is convenient. like this:

you may need a pipe cutter for the fork steerer, a star nut setter, crown race tool etc but these you can improvise or have it done where you buy your fork. Just be certain of the steerer tube length.

Depending on what your component choices are you might only need to spend a little. I'd say if you're going all "modern" you'll need the BB tool, but if you're technically inclined you should be able to replace most of the bike tools using your normal ones or build them yourself. Here's a link to Speedub.Nate's headset press tutorial, you can search his NIC for more tutorials about DIY tools.
