Build My 575 for me!

ok. i'm taking the next step soon, very soon. i know these threads are started weekly...but, i want/need your suggestions on builds for my future 575. first off, it's been proven that orange bikes are the fastest, so i'm getting the orange frame. with the all important cosmetics out of the way...build the rest for me starting from the enduro package (i.e. swapping forks, wheelsets are the most important for me):

a little background on me. i'm a hardtail guy. my main ride is a IF Steel Deluxe. other main bike is an Ibis Alibi (aluminum hardtail). but, i'm going to the other extreme with 5+ inches as my first FS bike.

i want to start with the Enduro Package pricepoint and keep the price around there first and foremost by improving the fork and the wheelset. i want it to be more of an all mtn build. i.e. doesn't have to be the lightest build at all. just the best ride for the money is what i'm looking for.

I can predict the future:
1 person (iviguy) is going to tell you about the RS Revolution, and that you should buy it from Will at Full Cycles
3 people will tell you to replace the seatpost clamp, because it sucks donkey balls (it does, listen to them)
those same 3 will tell you to also get a thomson seatpost along w/ the new clamp.

The bike rules, no matter if you're rockin' a fox or an RS or a 'zokes or whatever.

Don't listen to laticacidbath. He really can't predict anything.

I will recommend putting a RS Revelation on that bike though. I would definately not recommend the "Revolution" as was predicted. I hear that fork is crappy...

Since he already told you to replace the seatpost clamp, I won't tell you that because although I believe it is a good move I don't want to be party to his predictions....

He didn't predict anything on the wheelset soooo... Definately upgrade the wheelset. If Gary at fullcycles.com will give you $200 credit on the current wheels, spend another $300 on top of that and get the CrossMax enduro wheels.

Lastly, either get some really paddes shorts or replace that saddle because it hurts your hinney.

Now, I predict that lacticacidbath will indeed post a reply to someone on this board. This will in fact happen today. Yes, I am that good...

a new Viz machine!
order it local from Reeds unless you can do your own wrenching then go online.
Like everyone will say, the Fox Talas I had on mine was unreliable and within 6 months:
1. seals were useless from Day 1
2. Lockout knob ball bearings malfunctioned (although this was the fault of a shop in Moab who was trying to fix my seals).
3. Rebound rod broke
I had the Talas Pushed and put on a Revelation in the meantime and the Pushed Talas and the Revelation are about the same performance wise... If Reeds will trade the Talas with a Pike or a Revelation, I'd go for it. YRMV
Trade the seatpost clamp for a Salsa or Hope unit.
Get some good foothills tires (I run a 2.35 Kenda BG Stick-E up front and a Mutano 2.4 in the back).
Upgrade the wheels when you get the chance... Light wheels really transformed this bike for me (since I'm more of an XC guy).

I disagree with the wheelset advice.

The CrossMax are built with custom hubs and rims, so that if you were to break a spoke, or otherwise whack the wheel out, you'll have to be shopping around to fix'em. Plus, you need a special spoke wrench to get at the nipples, as they are down in the hub, not on the rim. People are wild about that wheelset, but I'd be wary. For the same amount of dough just swap out the rims.

But, Mavic x317's are fine rims. (jeebus, especially for texas). If you have the money, and feel like you have to bling everything out on the bike, than maybe 317's arn't right for you. If you ride alot, and recognize that you may thrash your wheels, the 317's will be just fine, IMHO.

i'm probably going to go the online route. i don't really need the LBS support from a wrenching standpoint, and eagle is quite a drive. i'll drive out to see brian for wheels, etc.. but that's about it. actually, i like to get brian to help me with things. he doesn't give youa run around on things, always follows up and treats you fair. and he's good with bikes. but, we don't need to turn this into an anti LBS thread.

bottom line though; i doubt they could come close with the price, tax, etc. from what i've read, there are quite a few online guys that offer great support during the order and thereafter.

as far as wheels go. i want a traditional wheelset, not a system wheelset. i have a set of crossmax xls and they are great. fortunatley, brian in boise mentioned above is very good with wheels and helped me out with my crossmax front. anyway, i want a traditional 32-hole build. if i get the pike with the thru axle...what are my options for hubs...not breaking the bank here...again, starting with the enduro build kit.

which pike should i get? what model. the revelation is air only right? i'm not worried too much about the weight..so, i want a coil.

If online, really, I know I sound like a broken record here, but fullcycles.com is excellent. The prices are better than anywhere I have found.

If you are wanting to upgrade the wheels, why not just get the Race disk build that comes with the DT Swiss wheelset? You can get either the QR or the Maxel option plus you get upgraded components. And going from the Float RLC to say a Pike coil is actually money in your pocket. The Fox will probably give a trade in value of about $600 to $650 and the Pike coil shouldn't be more than about $400 to $450. You can get the baseline race disk for around $2700 with about a minus $200 for the fork swap and that puts you in the $2500 range. Add $100 if you want the DHX Air. This is the route I would go.

Well, the rims themselves may be ok. I'm not impressed with the hubs nor the spokes. I think this wheel build has some noticeable flex too. But what do you expect for a $200 wheelset?

Interested? You can keep the cassette, rotors, and the qr's.

LOL.. Actually only one is used and the other is brand new.. (a replacement is being delivered today for the rear). But rather than spend more right now, I'll just keep them until they are thrashed. My wife is limiting my spending after this purchase...

just got off the phone with full cycles

haven't pulled the trigger quite yet...

but, it's invevitable...it's going to happen

he's quoted me an awesome price with some switching out of the fork from the vanilla to the Pike-Coil. and switching the wheels at no extra charge from the 317 to the 321.

his recommendation was that the 317's were not soooo hot...and the 321 would be a better AM rim..

this also comes with the new RP23 shock.

here's a little review i found through google.

Have now done 4 rides with the new Fox RP23 rear shock and I am impressed. The earlier RP3 had a lever that put it in either open or pro-pedal mode, but the RP23 has that and then 3 individual settings for the pro-pedal mode, light, medium and stiff. settings. In the stiff setting, it is almost a lockout, but the shock still actuates on a hit.

i don't know much about it...but, as long as it does the job and has more function..:thumbsup: cool, right?

here's more:

The new Fox RP23 shock The Fox RP3 shock was well received, but some users didn't like the rather vague clicks and were confused by the three settings. The RP23 shock is coming out to simplify and improve things. Firstly, there are only two positions for the lever (That'll be the '2' in the name then) - these are 'Firm' Pro Pedal and 'Light'. Then there's a three way knob to turn (that's the '3' then') - this dials in the Pro-Pedal setting when in the 'firm' setting.

So this means that in 'Light', there's very little ProPedal. In 'Firm' it can be set to your choice of 'Light, Medium or Firm' depending on your preferences, weight and the trail. The platform in all positions only affects low speed force (pedalling bob) and doesn't affect your medium and big hit damping.

Talking of damping, the RP23 also has an increased rebound damping range that should cover every situation...

moving on..the quoted price is 2350ish...just need to postpone..a touch longer...and then, i'll make the order....

also...i'm a boise resident now..but, i'm originally from SC...so, i'm a gamecock fan..i had to ask if he was keeping up with the beavers run in the College World Series..he said he wasn't really watching..but, that Corvallis was pretty excited about it..

anyway, i mentioned that as a gamecock fan....i've always wanted to see a matchup with the cocks and the beavers...the innuendo game if you will.....he got a kick out of that..and said they were always hoping for the same....

btw..cocks would win...

I have my eye on another set of wheels.. If I wind up buying them at a good price, I may take you up on this offer... Interested? The odds are probably less than 50% though unless the price is right on what I am looking at. So don't hold your breath....

I just got a more used pair of x317 discs for $100. handbuilt.

they're to replace the x223's that I killed. good luck on the new wheels though.
